andybarton Posted July 28, 2012 Share #3 Posted July 28, 2012 Aperture gets updated so that obviously works too. The annoying MobileMe warning has gone. ML is a very minor update from what I can see. Bug fixes mostly and no obvious differences.
sanyasi Posted July 28, 2012 Share #4 Posted July 28, 2012 +1 LR4 and CS6 I am not surprised. Mountain Lion seems to add new features rather than rewrite the underlying architecture, but I am not an engineer.

sanyasi Posted July 30, 2012 Share #6 Posted July 30, 2012 I am not sure if something was in the printer queue or there was some other bug, but after upgrading to Mountain Lion my Epson 4880 was hanging--nothing would print. I downloaded a new driver for Mountain Lion and things starting working again. What was puzzling to me was that the driver said Mountain Lion, but it was dated February 2012. In short, if you install Mountain Lion and have printing problems, check for driver updates.

When I went to Lion, my Image Print software would not work until I deleted the printer and installed it again. All this stuff gets in the way of taking pictures (!). stunsworth Posted July 30, 2012 Share #8 Posted July 30, 2012 ML is a very minor update from what I can see. Bug fixes mostly and no obvious differences. In depth review... OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion: the Ars Technica review | Ars Technica I updated yesterday. 4 gig download, then about 45mins for the actual update on my 4 year old iMac. cocker Posted July 30, 2012 Share #9 Posted July 30, 2012 Likewise - and no problems. PS6 & LR4 both fine and my 4 year old iMac and 3 year old Macbook seem a bit less clunky than they did with Lion - maybe thats because they have had a bit of a clean out in the upgrade process. andybarton Posted July 30, 2012 Share #10 Posted July 30, 2012 I hope we've all been doing full back-ups first... My wifi connection problem that started about a month ago has been cured, so I am a happy camper.

ML is a very minor update from what I can see. Bug fixes mostly and no obvious differences. As it happens, the HD on my MBP failed. Apple replaced it for free (Apple Care) and restored everything from my Time Machine backup. When the mbp started up, ALL the apps and even the dock were just as they should have been! Talk about saving your bacon.

Paul J Posted August 3, 2012 Share #14 Posted August 3, 2012 Don't upgrade if you need NEC Spectraview. It's not working so well and Spectraview can't communicate with the monitor to calibrate it. They are working on it with Apple apparently. SpectraviewII | Download Spectraview2 Software

ML is a very minor update from what I can see. Bug fixes mostly and no obvious differences. Apparently "Save As" is gone. There is a furious thread about it on the mac forum, that inspired my "Flame" thread, and is longer than the M8 LCD thread here, and many, many times more vitriolic. And, don't dare suggest that "Duplicate" works just as well, or you will really cop it! .
wparsonsgisnet Posted September 6, 2012 Share #16 Posted September 6, 2012 I have developed a yellow streak down my back. I was *really* unhappy with Lion after I upgraded to it, with the MBP crashing several times a day. It turned out to be the faulty HD meantioned above, but I am extremely charry now about updating and will wait for some months more before burning my fingers on ML. It turned out to be the faulty HD meantioned above, but I am extremely charry now about updating and will wait for some months more before burning my fingers on ML. Regards, Bill, I can understand your decision based on your experience. But I wouldn't hold a faulty disk drive against the OS. (I am not saying/implying with this sentence you do.) BTW, I have had Mountain Lion from day one on my MacBook Pro. No issues at all so far. I recently upgraded several MacBook Pros - about 3 years old - of various family members. The upgrade was twofold, first doubling memory from 4 to 8 GB max, second, replace HD or 3-year old SSD with the Crucial 512 GB SSD. This Part Number: CT512M4SSD2, cost around $400 per SSD. CT512M4SSD2 - 512GB, 2.5-inch Solid State Drive , from Crucial.com. WOW! What a difference that makes! Almost like having a new machine. One MacBook Pro has been used for serious software development and went through several HDs in 3 years as they failed. Having a closer look at the usage pattern revealed that the machine swapped memory a lot, 4 GB was not enough. Also, that machine felt pretty warm at the right below the keyboard. That's where the HD sits. So doubling memory revealed that the typical usage pattern requires about 4.5 GB, so the swapping is now avoided. Also, with the SSD now in place, that particular warm spot disappeared and data access has improved dramatically. On my own MacBook Pro going from 4 to 8 GB made a dramatic improvement in the performance of PS CS6 and other editing programs. The new 512 GB SSD replacing an Apple 256 GB SSD that originally came with the machine, resulted also in a significant noticeable performance improvement. My take: Max out memory and get a 6 Gb/s SSD to avoid unnecessary tear and wear and to get optimal performance for your CPU. The machine also will last longer. I've been looking longingly at the SSD MBP's that are now available -- maybe I'll do the same as you have and put in my own SSD. Great idea! Regards, Hi Bill, For the newest MacBook Pro one has to max out the SSD memory from that get go as now that flash memory seems to be hardwired in. So, no upgrade possible later. Also, every time I don't max out memory from the beginning, I do it later anyway as it gains so much.
philipus Posted September 7, 2012 Share #20 Posted September 7, 2012 Hi Bill I can't help with the heat issue (which notebook is it specifically?). However as for SSDs what I did in my Macbook (not Pro) late 2008 aluminium unibody (incidentally the oldest notebook which supports ML) was to install a 40GB SSD as the system drive. I put it in an OWC Datadoubler in the optical bay. Sounds complicated but was super easy. Granted if one needs the superdrive this is not a good idea but I didn't. The drive was an OWC Mercury Electra, which is OWC's 3G drive. The notebook doesn't support 6G drives and trust me when I say that a 3G drive is very sufficient. Photoshop CS5 launched in less than two bounces. System boot in 17 secs (though, like you, I usually sleep my Macs). Then I kept a mechanical drive as the data drive/home folder, in my case a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB. Having this 7200rpm drive did not hamper the system much in terms of image processing (scratch volume was on the SSD). Cheers Philip
