I always use Aperture 3 for my pp.

A year a so ago i bought CS5 and would like to learn the p/shop processing based on a thread l saw saying that silver e-fex was really photoshop manipulations re-marketed

First off I am struggling to find the raw profile in p/shop for my m8.

Advice would be appreciated please.

Steve.

Might I suggest you get either the Scott Kelby book on the subject, or if you want to delve deeper, the Martin Evening one.

ACR will set the appropriate profile automatically. Of course you can tweak it to your own taste and save it.

Steve.

Absolutely untrue. Said by people that don't understand the complete functionality of the App.

My advice RE: Silver Efex Pro 2 is to go here first early on a day that you have time and get a free day pass.

Online Training Free Trial | KelbyTraining.com

Then take this course:

The Art of the Black and White Print | KelbyTraining.com

and pay close attention to these lessons:

Overview of Silver Efex Pro 2

Advanced Functionality

Josh (presenter) was responsible for flying me down to Nik Software in San Diego for some advanced training a couple months ago and I was blown away by what I learned was behind the curtain in SEP2, even though I thought I truly new the software.

Well said.

I suppose it could be possible to do all those things Silver Efex can do in Photoshop if you had day set aside to work on an image, but apart from the actual time it takes there is also the truly arcane knowledge needed to do some of those things. There are no brownie points on offer in using Photoshop when the alternative is a few minutes work in Efex and then on to the next image. I think some people think a few contrast and brightness adjustments are all that is on offer in Silver Efex.

I totally agree Steve but there are some thing in the program that do thing PS cannot.

First lets close all the triangles on the right to remove the clutter.:

Now open only the Global Adjustments Panel. SEP2 has some really complex algorithms that evaluate only the image you have presented. Some of the sliders that present themselves only after you open all the triangles and that Photoshop cannot do are "Dynamic Brightness" and "Soft Contrast". Also, Structure can selectively effect specific areas of the image you can see below. Clarity in CS6 or LR4 effect the Midtones and Shadow areas of the image only with no selectivety. LR3's Clarity effected Midtones only.

Another thing many people pass up and don't see under the Selective Adjustments with Control Points is that dropping the little arrow gives you 4 more sliders. Amplify Whites, Amplify Blacks, fine Structure and Selective Colorization.

But yes, the masking ability of the software alone can save you hours of work.
