lens problem

I have a 5 year old summilux 35 which has developed a bit of wobble (I think in the aperture ring). Anyone know what the cause might be and how difficult it is to fix. Can I take it to a non Leica technician (because of the inconvenience)? Is it a problem to continue shooting with it

As the lens is five years old it is presumably out of warranty. I am not sure where you live but as I live in the UK when older lenses have needed attention I have sent them to Malcolm Taylor who dealt with them promptly and charged less than Solms. Obviously with a valuable lens like a Summilux it is wise to choose a technician who is known to be a Leica expert.

 

If the lens is still working well despite its wobble I would expect the repair to be fairly simple in the right hands.

I have sent a number of lenses to Malcolm Taylor, he has returned them all very efficiently one indeed had a bit of a 'wobble' this was an older 50 summilux, he checked rebuilt (Something has come loose internally) and 6bit coded all for a lot less than 'just' 6 bit coding at Solms.

 

He clearly knows is onions and is an interesting chap. I get the impression he has probably seen more lenses than anyone. We spoke about the Noctilux 1.2 last time and he talked about it like an old friend he knew very well

 

When he talks technically I understand 25% at most !

 

I also know of one shop at least that send lenses to Malcolm

Just noticed that my 35 Lux Asph has the same problem. Front wobbles and moves in and out about a mm.

I have a Silver 35mm F2 and it has the same problem. This lens was brand new

which I bought. After using for 2 months, this problem appeared. I send it to the

Leica agent and they got it tightened.

 

I wondered why this happened to such an expensive lens?

Welcome to the forum Larry.

 

What do you mean by "wobble" - in the direction the aperture ring turns or on axis?

 

My 35 FLE's aperture ring is, like the rings on my 50 Asph and 90 Elmarit-M, a little bit loose. It is possible to nudge it to the right and left a tiny bit "within" one stop. There's a slight clicking sound, too. In addition, the ring can also be moved very slightly on axis.

 

Now, these three lenses are anodized black and their aperture rings have somewhat rougher stops than chrome lenses. My chrome 50 pre-asph Summilux LTM has an aperture ring which is slightly looser (and also has less distinct stops).

 

This is in my experience normal and has no impact on operation.
