It seem that we both generally use and prefer Aperture. However, up till now you could develop M-Minochrom DNG files only in Lightroom and Photoshop (using ACR) and, once in Lightroom, it doesn't make that much sense to export a TIFF and pick it up for further processing in Aperture. Now, however, Andrey Tverdokhleb, the developer of Raw Photo Processor (RPP), has posted a beta version of RPP that develops M-Monochrom files for downloading at this link. As far as I can see RPP produces the same resolution as LR4. Unlike color DNGs, for which RPP produces more resolution and better color than either LR or Aperture, the Monochrom DNGs don't require interpolation, which means, as Andrey says, "I wouldn't expect any difference in resolution in this case, unless LR does something with noise filtering and antialiasing. With tone corrections RPP should be able to pull better details out of shadows. I don't have enough samples yet to be really conclusive." However, I made no adjustments in RPP but only used it for raw development and exported the TIFFS, which I then imported into Aperture. Please note the following: 1. RPP may default to saving files as "LAB TIFF 16-bit", which can be read by LR, but not by Aperture. For the files to be read by Aperture you need to change this setting to "RGB TIFF 16-bit (BetaRGB)." 2. Make sure that in the Settings menu the following item is checked: "Optimize image for post processing on Save". (Explained in User Manual). 3. There is a way for Batch workflow for RPP described in the RPP User Manual. 4. You can get the User Manual by selecting "Manual" in the Help menu. I've been using RPP with Aperture for my Ricoh GXR M-Module files, about which you can read here. Below is a version of Jono's M-Monocnrome seascape shot, which I developed in RPP and then brought into Apoerture. Noe for some more "Alt. Processing": I then brought it into Color Efex Pro 4 and applied the "Dark Contrasts" filter and move a few of the sliders a bit and also used three Control Points for dodging and burning. And then, back in Aperture, made a slight contrast adjustment using Curves. All this just took about three minutes. Of course, I could have done the same thing in Lightroom, but, as I stated above, I much prefer Aperture. I played a bit with the files and LR. New features in 4.5.0: • Added support for Nikon D4, D800; Olympus E-M5, E-PL3, E-PM1; Panasonic GX1; Canon G1X, 5DMkIII; • Relocated and regrouped most of menu items to menus Controls and Settings. • Added new mechanism for multi-file settings export and import (see chapter Workflow Helpers). • Added support for 8/16-bit sRGB TIFF output. • Double click on image now disables "Zoom to fit" and postions clicked part in the center of the window. • Better UI handling of low resolution images. • Added support for HD 709 output with studio swing. • Added Deselect item to the Controls menu. • Bugfixes This is certainly not new software, it has been around for quite awhile.
