The space shuttle Enterprise does a flyover in NY (x5)

The space shuttle program was hugely successful, but has been shut down. The remaining “ships” will be placed in museums, and in June this one will be placed on the deck of the USS Intrepid, a WWII aircraft carrier converted into an excellent aerospace museum. The shuttle which will end up here, the Enterprise, was so named in honor of the old Star Trek series. The Enterprise lacks rocket motors and heat protection ceramic tiles, and was used to test gliding and landing. It would be taken aloft on a modified Boeing 747 which was stripped of everything unnecessary so that it could carry the space shuttle. Some of the 747's modifications show in these photos.

Friday morning it dropped to between 1000 and 1200 feet, and flew upriver (with a chase plane visible in two of these photos) from the Statue of Liberty, beyond the George Washington Bridge, and turned around just past the Tappan Zee Bridge before making another pass downriver. After that it went north again over Eastern New jersey, turned east, and landed at JFK. It will travel via barge to the Intrepid, where on or about June 6 it will rest in its place of honor.

These are all shot with my D2 – The DMR/R8/80-200 would have been better, but also would have been too bulky and heavy for my brief case on a work day.

Stuart,

These are breathtaking pictures of a sad day for NASA and the space program.

From the appearance of these shots, your D2 did a yeoman job. I can't see any room for improvement.

Paul
