New Yorker Al Freni started shooting photos when he was 10. Before the Korean war Al was already an accomplished photographer, holding a top secret clearance and doing work for the government as well as photo journalism. During the Korean war he saw his draft number quickly approaching so he enlisted in the Air Force, expecting the Air Force to honor its commitment to make him a photographer, but they sent him to electronics school in Colorado instead. With the help of one of the base chaplains he managed to change all that, and became President Eisenhower’s personal photographer at the Western Whitehouse in Colorado. You can see one of his Life magazine photos at this link (http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/pres-dwight-d-eisenhower-watching-7-yr-old-grandson-david-news-photo/50376985?language=en-US), showing the President fishing with his grandson David. Al tells how all the other photographers present missed the shot since they were busy smoking and BSing. I ran into Al Friday morning along the Hudson River where we gathered with hordes of other people to see the space shuttle Enterprise flyover atop a modified Boeing 747. I’ll post some of those images tomorrow in the Other section.
