stonearabiapix Posted April 26, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted April 26, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I remember reading that the 39mm uv/ir filter will fit the ser. 5.5 diameter 40mm Summicron- C lens, without the retaining ring. Being held in with the shade, as the 5.5. Â 1. Is this true? 2. How is the best/safest way to separate the glass from the ring? Â I prefer not to cross thread the 39mm it into the lens. Advertisement Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 Hi stonearabiapix, Take a look here uv/ir filter-removale from retainingn ring. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 26, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted April 26, 2012 That is correct. Some filters are held with a retaining clip which you can lever out of its seat, orthers will have a screwed-in fetaining ring which unscrews with some persuasion
stonearabiapix Posted April 26, 2012 Author Share #3 Â Posted April 26, 2012 Seems to be a clip...
jaapv Posted April 27, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted April 27, 2012 Mind you, the filter glass will rattle a bit, but it will work just fine. If so desired you can stop the rattling with a rubber washer.
stonearabiapix Posted April 27, 2012 Author Share #5 Â Posted April 27, 2012 UPDATE: For any who intended to follow this process, be aware that the original lens shade will not work. The filter takes up to much space to be able to screw it on.
jaapv Posted April 27, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted April 27, 2012 That is why you have to remove the entire ring, it will not fit otherwise. If you use just the glass, it will fit excellently, albeit rather loosely. The shade will go on no problem ( I have it in front of me right now.) stonearabiapix Posted April 27, 2012 Author Share #7 Â Posted April 27, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had removed all metal from the glass filter and the shade would not go on. Nor would would the filter fit inside the shade diameter. Almost but not quite. Â I have just returned from the hardware store with some emery cloth and have taken a mm or so off the edge. The filter now fits snugly inside the shade, with no rattling! Â There must be a size difference in the filter diameters that Leica used for these filters. lct Posted April 27, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted April 27, 2012 Leica UV/IR filters need a bit of DIY. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/42899-m8-summicron-40mm-f2-3.html#post1460564
