likealeica Posted April 24, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted April 24, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone seen Panasonic's writeup on the to-be-released-in-May DMC GX1. It seems to be a $1000 camera with 14-42 "Premium Zoom Lens." I wonder if this could be the heart of one of Leica's May 10 cameras? Comments?
Advertisement Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Hi likealeica, Take a look here Panasonic DMC GX1 and May 10. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Archiver Posted April 24, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted April 24, 2012 Leica has stated in the past that the m43 standard does not give the image quality that they expect for their systems, and they will not be entering the m43 body market. Leica also seem to be moving away from using rebadged Panasonics, with the exception of their compact cameras. Â While their work with Panasonic has lead them to produce m43 lenses, it seems very unlikely that they will bring out a rebadged Panasonic body. The Panasonic GX1 was released available as far back as November 2011 and can be had for far less than $1000.
250swb Posted April 25, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted April 25, 2012 Leica has stated in the past that the m43 standard does not give the image quality that they expect for their systems, ...... andybarton Posted April 25, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted April 25, 2012 Leica have already moved beyond 4/3 years ago. Â I would see any Leica 4/3 as a seriously retrograde step.
jaapv Posted April 25, 2012 Share #5  Posted April 25, 2012 "stated in the past...." things move on, technology does not stand still. Steve I think they could safely state it in the present as well.
250swb Posted April 25, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted April 25, 2012 Leica have already moved beyond 4/3 years ago. Â 'Moving beyond' can only mean the move to full frame, so unless the new EVIL camera is anything less than full frame that will be a retrograde step as well then. I wouldn't be so pessimistic, manufacturers are doing superb things with smaller sensors nowadays. Â Steve

likealeica Posted April 26, 2012 Author Share #8 Â Posted April 26, 2012 On Panasonic' website. Maybe they just never updated their site. They show the body available now and the body with lens available in May. I was just wondering what influence, if any, panasonic would have on May 10. That was my real question
lars_bergquist Posted April 26, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted April 26, 2012 The influence will be diminishing and probably close to nil. The kinds of cameras that Panasonic could offer are a rapidly diminishing market segment. Â On the other hand I cannot think that the new EVIL camera will have a full 35mm sensor. That would cannibalise M sales. 'At least APS-C' does probably mean 'bigger than APS-C'. So the camera may have a sensor close to the M8 format. It could actually be M8 format. NZDavid Posted May 1, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted May 1, 2012 And yet there are a couple of Leica badged lenses -- a 25mm Summilux and 45mm Macro-Elmarit -- available for the Panasonic G series of cameras, but there is no Leica body for them. Of course, there angle of view would be different with a different sized sensor.
jaapv Posted May 1, 2012 Share #13 Â Posted May 1, 2012 Because they are made by Panasonic wih Leica design quality control. Sony uses Zeiss lenses, yet there is no Zeiss videocamera, nor a Zeiss DSLR.
250swb Posted May 1, 2012 Share #14 Â Posted May 1, 2012 For all the naysayers still living with old ideas about m4/3 you may want to read the DPR in depth review of the new Olympus OM-D. In a nutshell it says that while there are still small differences between the quality of m4/3 and APS-C (and other EVIL camera formats) they are not sufficient to worry about anymore, both in terms of dynamic range and noise. The question of artistic DOF is taken care of with the faster primes available with m4/3. It goes on to say that all things considered the only next step up from the OM-D is to go to full frame, there are no formats or cameras in-between that are any better. Â So APS-C of the Fuji eX Pro1 now seems to offer dubious advantages especially in terms of size, and the Sony NEX 7 is not the revolutionary camera it was two months ago. lct Posted May 1, 2012 Share #15 Â Posted May 1, 2012 Why 4/3 instead of APS with fast lenses? All to lose nothing to win IMHO.
