ark8012 Posted April 15, 2012 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, all, I am a new member of this forum in the US. Sadly, my first post here is asking for your help for the well-known problem. I recently got a Leica M8, which is my first digital M. It has very early serical number, and about 15000 actuations. I was so excited to get the body,,,, but when I check some test shots.. I found the Bandings on my pics. All of pics with ISO 640.. and a few with ISO 320 with under exposure. What would be the best choice for repair in the US?? and whoever recently repair it, could you please tell me how and how much you paid. I have checked dead pixels with PixelFixer, it did not solve the banding problem. so I guess it is not a dead pixel problem. I am trying to solve the problem rather than refund... Please advise.. ErikP Posted April 15, 2012 Share #6 Posted April 15, 2012 Hmm - there has been many treads on the subject to compare pictures with yours - still I can not se anything in those pictures. Regards Erik
rjans Posted April 15, 2012 Share #7 Posted April 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It looks like the red line. Recently my M8 has been fixed at Solms.
Lightwrangler Posted April 15, 2012 Share #8 Posted April 15, 2012 IMHO that's a dead sensor pixel, not banding. Pixel can be mapped out by Leica CS. Mike
wda Posted April 15, 2012 Share #9 Posted April 15, 2012 ark8012, Welcome to the forum! I cannot see evidence of your problem in the pictures posted. Further, assuming no cropping, would the banding not be central in both pictures? Finally, your first recourse is with the vendor. But you need to clarify the problem first. jaapv Posted April 15, 2012 Share #10 Posted April 15, 2012 What banding there may be is clearly not a sensor issue, but strong underexposure.
ark8012 Posted April 15, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted April 15, 2012 This is a shot at ISO 2500. I opened the file on LR, then export as JPG file. The banding looks much thiner after export. at ISO 2500 The banding shows up at the same place all the time. I tried some trick what I got from here, which shot with over exposure then editing later. The banding problem looks better, but I still see the banding. With under exposure, I even see the banding at ISO 320. Since, this is my first experience with digital M, I might not understand fully the banding problem. If yo know better way to check for the banding problem, please let me know. Oh, thank you all of you who replied here.
ErikP Posted April 15, 2012 Share #12 Posted April 15, 2012 Ok - now it was more clear - quite a nice line :-) Return the camera? Dealer send it for repair?
xrogers Posted April 15, 2012 Share #13 Posted April 15, 2012 That's a much more telling photo. The camera needs to go to Leica, they'll determine if it can be addressed by mapping out a bad pixel, or in the sensor is bad. If you can return the camera I think you should. There are many M8 cameras out there ready to use, without sensor defects. Later, Clyde
ErikP Posted April 15, 2012 Share #14 Posted April 15, 2012 Yupp - send it, change it ......
wda Posted April 15, 2012 Share #15 Posted April 15, 2012 Can you please add an arrow to point to banding?
ark8012 Posted April 15, 2012 Author Share #16 Posted April 15, 2012 Can you please add an arrow to point to banding? Sure, is it visible now? at ISO 2500 arrow
jaapv Posted April 16, 2012 Share #17 Posted April 16, 2012 Yes - that is a red line, not banding, caused by a dead pixel. Your sensor needs to be remapped/replaced. Send the camera to Leica.
ark8012 Posted April 16, 2012 Author Share #18 Posted April 16, 2012 Yes - that is a red line, not banding, caused by a dead pixel. Your sensor needs to be remapped/replaced. Send the camera to Leica. Is the red line not a banding? If you see the first sample (you need to magnify the pics to see), the line is black. If the line is not a banding, what is the banding problem? Thanks,
ark8012 Posted April 16, 2012 Author Share #19 Posted April 16, 2012 Thank you all who gave answers for what it is. It turned out the M8 needs a remapping. I think it is fixable problem rather than replacement of the whole sensor.
jaapv Posted April 16, 2012 Share #20 Posted April 16, 2012 It depends what percentage of the pixels has been mapped out already on your individual sensor All sensors are mapped when new and sometimes as maintenance. If the percentage exceeds the tolerance Leica will replace the sensor.
