Digilux 2 is the most talked about and loved camera here - but is it justified?

Learn the camera, master its features... learn how to perform with it and it will reward you with wonderful images time and time again.

Just my opinion... I could be wrong.

Nope, you're absolutely right. One should use the tool one likes or believes to be right for the task and learn how to use it.

Food for thoughts:

- with the Nikon D70, whenever the picture was not what I had expected, the immediate reaction was: "With the Nikon D200, it wouldn't have been a problem". Then I switched to the D200 and the reaction became: "With a D300, this picture would have been great" or "I wish I had this xxx lens".

With the D2, the thinking becomes "The photographer has to improve his skills". ;)

- the D2 is such a camera that it mentally forces you to be up to what it can deliver. Or in other words, feeling ashamed to take a so-so picture with it.

Cheers

Michel

No, no, no. The Digilux 3 is a completely different cam.

It looks similar, yes, but it is really different.

Have you ever compared the shutter sound of those two cams?

  • 5 months later...

I bought an early LC1. I just liked the way it looked and heard some good talk about it. the price was reasonable at the time.

Of course I needed a new sensor at one point.

I love it, and still use it all the time. I bought an L1 and did not like it. I also now have a GF1 and a GX1 I use these with my old OM lenses and the kit lenses that came with them. They are both great cameras, and the GX1 is especially interesting and good. the 16 MP sensor works well in low light.

Back to the LC1.....I can always tell a shot taken with that camera....they are just so special. I does Jpegs so well it is scary.

I love my D2, but knowing I had to send it in for service to have the rubber covering replaced I found a D-Lux-5 with spare battery, hadngrip and EVF in excellent shape on eBay. Using it while the D2 was away, and since, and switching back and forth I find the only two reasons I prefer the D2 is it looks like a real camera and its manual controls. Otherwise, the V-Lux beats it.

Is it justified?

I can answer this question like this: i did not touch my D2 for a good year and although I always bring it to vacations and such I also take my little sigma DP1. I always am in doubt when leaving if i should take the D2, mainly for its size.

This september I brought it to poland, the justification is one word;

FUN to take photographs with!

And the results in jpeg are stunning, i do not like editing photographs and 99 out of 100 are already good out of the cam...

so, if you are not making money of taking photographs (like the majority of people), FUN is the justification (for me)

all the best to the D2 users :)

ronald

there is a second reason; a philosophical one:

when owning a Digilux2, for me the craving for the latest and greatest camera stopped!

Yesterday I recalled another advantage my D2 has over the D-Lux-5: It is stealthier. The D-Lux uses a near infrared light for autofocus but the D2 does not.

you can disable that IR light.....after which, the D-Lux becomes uber-stealth! I love hip shooting with the D-Lux....as it is tiny, black, and virtually undetectable!

i'm in a perpetual state of confusion about the Digilux 2. One one hand, it seems beautifully designed and made.....with a unique leica lens and great photos i've seen people take with it. On the other hand, i think it is quite expensive for the $700+ they sell at 2nd hand....and am always looking down upon the 5mp limit. I concede that megapixels aren't as important as they're made out to me....however 5 seems too low for my tastes right now.

that being said, it is nice to see such enthusiasm for an older digital camera....and i do agree many of the photos i've seen from a D2 are gorgeous. Definitely a 'cult following' camera if i've ever seen one.

Five mega-pixels is more than adequate for many users. How many regularly print larger than A4? Only when pressed into professional applications would the D2 be found wanting.

if one crops photos, it would definitely be noticeable. otherwise...i would agree that 5 should suffice for most applications, especially with a nice lens.

When one disables the IR light does the camera still autofocus adequately?

the only time that light may affect any autofocus would be in very dark situations or In very low light....otherwise i have found it to be pretty useless-----aside from telling the world that I am taking a photo! :)

Please tell me how to turn it off.

BTW: We should meet sometime.

If you go into the menu and look for the AF Assist function, you can switch it from 'on' to 'off'....if you really need it in low light, you can always turn it back on.

yes we should definitely hang out sometime! we should try to get a nyc gtg organized as well.

Such a strange way to approach this subject. This camera is so easy to use and always a delight to have around my neck or in my hand. A magnificent design. The Cron shot wide open is just amazing. Having the ability to auto focus is also a delight. This camera just looks the part and more importantly, it delivers. Of all the cameras I bring out into the street, this always get's me an intro without ever having to say a word. It is elegant and practical. Everyone wants to hold it. Hope mine stays in good form for a very long time. :D

  • 2 weeks later...

I was recently told that a good image is still a good image no matter how old it is. The same applies to cameras IMHO, except that the D2 and it's sibling the Panasonic LC1 are not just good they are great little cameras and very useable.

Does anyone use the Leica Elpro-D E69 close up lens with their D2/LC!? I know that they are rare as hens teeth now but I do know of one that may be available.
