The majority of wooden nutcrackers were made as an example of a woodcarver's skill & even if functional were generally not meant to be used for cracking nuts. If you look @ 19th Century photos of them done in Central Europe where a lot of them came from you will often notice a plain steel nutcracker nearby. Present but discreetly almost not noticed.
