Does anyone know if the Metz 24 AF-1 or 36 AF-5 digital will work with the M6ttl/M7?

The Metz website mentions Leica/Panasonic compatibility, but I wonder if this refers to digital cameras only.

Has anyone used this combo?

Has anyone used an older SCA type flash similar in size to the 24 AF-1 or 36 AF-5?

thanks

You need to look up the firing voltage of the flashes to be sure you don't fry the electronics. With an M 6 ttl/ M7 there is probably no problem, but with digital Nikons I believe it is limited to less than 6 volts.

I have a Metz 40 MZ-2 that has a firing voltage of about 5 volts. You can look up most flashes at Photo Strobe Trigger Voltages . I looked for your Metz and didn't see it. I did not know the brand of your other flash you asked about.

There are probably other sites to find this information. It is not in my flash instruction manual. You could always e-mail Metz for this voltage. I don't remember the e-mail address, but it is probably Metz.com. Since they are in Germany, you will not hear from them for a day or two.

I have an older Metz non SCA type flash and wondered about your question because I would like to replace my flash too. When I looked at the Metz website and chose either of these flashes, then analog, then Leica both M6 TTL and M7 was listed. I did not understand the firmware download though. I hope someone can answer your question for sure.

Before purchasing, check with your dealer. I think only SF24 and SF 58 can ttl meter on M6 ttl and M7.

On my M6 ttl, after some "try and error" I use SF24.

I'm sure the earlier SF20 is also OK, as are Metz guns which support the appropriate (3502?) SCA adapter, though the bigger ones would be physically a bit disproportionate for an M!

None of these units give full TTL compatibility with the M6ttl or M7 (or indeed with the M8 or M9). The mention of "Leica/Panasonic" compatibility on the Metz website refers only to the fact that the units are made in models for Four-Thirds cameras as well as for Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony Alpha.

As far as I know any of these models will work in basic manual and automatic modes on any M camera.

Trigger voltage is not an issue with any Mecablitz flash made in the last 20 years or more, including all SCA units.

A table here shows the older Metz SCA flashguns that can be used with an M6ttl/M7 and SCA3502.

Is the Metz 24 AF-1 essentially the same flash as the Leica SF 24D?

I know the Leica is made by Metz, but I wasn't sure if the Metz branded flash would do TTL on the M9.

No it won't. AFAIK the only non-Leica flashguns that do TTL on the M9 are the Mecablitz 45 CL-4 digital, 76 MZ-5 and the (discontinued?) 44 MZ-2, all with the SCA 3502 mark 5 adapter. As noted earlier in the thread, the other Mecablitz models that mention Leica compatibility, such as the "Olympus/Panasonic/Leica" version of the 24 AF-1 digital , do so because they're compatible with Four-Thirds cameras and Leica once sold one (the Digilux 3).

NB: I emphasised the word "digital" above because there are two versions of 45 CL-4: one digital and one not. Only the digital one is compatible with the SCA 3502.
