andybarton Posted April 3, 2012 Share #2 Posted April 3, 2012 Nice composition, John. The sky looks almost solarised from where I'm sitting.
mhanke Posted April 3, 2012 Share #3 Posted April 3, 2012 A glimpse from the past? The colours appear very faded, "historical". I assume that effect was deliberate, and it nicely matches the mood of the picture. Regards, Marcus
leicamann Posted April 3, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted April 3, 2012 Nice composition, John. The sky looks almost solarised from where I'm sitting. Andy, indeed it IS, that was a part of a difficult choice, drop the foreground or get the sky? Classic exposure conflict in Landscape shots, of course to day, simple..take one for the sky, one for the foreground, ..Photoshop..- Layers-- choose Opacity..et voila..conflict solved. With slide film..not so easy Cheers, JRM

I assume that effect was deliberate, and it nicely matches the mood of the picture. Regards, Marcus Marcus, I am trying to get as close to the muted tones in the slide, its almost monochromatic..so it works fine for me. The only colour at this point that doesn't capture the mix, is the green, but thats not the slide, thats my scanning, will give Silverfast a try and see if it can "grab the colour". Iduna Posted April 3, 2012 Share #6 Posted April 3, 2012 thanks for showing this monochrome picture. It is lovely and it took a lot of effort in processing. The result is remarkable. Good to know what is possible.

andybarton Posted April 3, 2012 Share #8 Posted April 3, 2012 Classic exposure conflict in Landscape shots That's why I use a ND grad filter, but only on my Hasselblad landscape shots. Used with care, they are a great help.
leicamann Posted April 3, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted April 3, 2012 That's why I use a ND grad filter, but only on my Hasselblad landscape shots. Used with care, they are a great help. Tricky..... That reminds me of a friend of mine who captured some fantastic landscapes on the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia..his answer..I used a graduated ND filter...I had forgotten... back then he spent a fair fortune for it, $ 285.00..which in todays dollars, about $500 or so. Well we are back there in June, it will have to be Fuji Velvia F , this time..... and I'll get that filter. Thanks again Cheers, JRM
leicamann Posted April 3, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted April 3, 2012 Lovely composition and tones. I very much like this... Thanks, its still in limbo, lets see if Silverfast can "crack the Kodachrome " enigma? Will repost that version tomorrow. Cheers, JRM

leicamann Posted April 3, 2012 Author Share #13 Posted April 3, 2012 Nice composition, John. The sky looks almost solarised from where I'm sitting. Andy, I rescanned with Silverfast, the exposure is fine, the issue AGAIN is with the latitude of Kodachrome, and its very easy " to strip" the image bare, working from DNG RAW may work, but I am not familiar enough with it to do any justice. As I have said years ago, a scan will make or break your image in the digital world. 10 points from Griffendor for failed scanning The second rendition is closer, but still not quite. The issue is you "know " there is plenty of info in the shadows, you know that the scan is too dark, but as soon as you try to "recover it" you end up doing a lot of stripping, in the end your left with a skelton of a magnificent image, the colour is stripped, highlights end up blown, its the perennial Kodachrome conundrum...doesn't mean I will stop though..I still think scanning RAW DNG is the way to get the best scan. WOW didn't see it from this side.... wow looks completely choked..... ok this one is DEFINITELY better. Cheers, JRM
leicamann Posted April 3, 2012 Author Share #14 Posted April 3, 2012 second try:(
andybarton Posted April 4, 2012 Share #15 Posted April 4, 2012 This one is a definite improvement on the first, IMHO. You've still got some blown sky, but the whole scan is much better balanced.
leicamann Posted April 4, 2012 Author Share #16 Posted April 4, 2012 Thanks Andy,, agreed...have a look at "take 2"..Kodachrome is very tricky stuff to scan,.. its easy to get a scan with blown skies and the rest black, When some people see that , they fold up their hands and say "forget it". On the other hand if you do manage to get the "sweet spot" , Kodachrome scans come up with some amazing results. Cheers, JRM
