Advertisement Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Hi dkCambridgeshire, Take a look here Unusual Leitz 400mm lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pop Posted April 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted April 2, 2012 The item description contains the term "epis". That may or may not be part of the term "Episcope". An episcope is a kind of projector used for projecting book pages and such using light reflected off the page. This would explain the large imaging area and the apparent absence of a variable aperture. It's, however, pure conjecture on my part. I have never seen the thing. dkCambridgeshire Posted April 2, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted April 2, 2012 Yes, I agree it is probably a lens from an epidiascope ie used for projecting images of book pages /printed material. I should have twigged the 'EPIS' clue. Thanks dunk
luigi bertolotti Posted April 3, 2012 Share #5 Posted April 3, 2012 I agree... a projector lens that probably cannot be practically used as a taking lens on LF cameras, supposed one finds the way to mount it onto, say, a Linhof or similar... anyway, an interesting item. The connection between the name "Epis" and the Epidiascope is at all reasonable... in Latin "Episcopus" means "Bishop" but I can't find a connection with... EPI means "above" in old Greek, and Epidiascope says clearly "projection from above". The Epis range of lenses is indeed intended for projection. I include photos of my huge (see the size compared to a classical Elmar 5 cm) and very heavy Leitz brass projection lens of the same 400 mm focal length. Welcome, dear visitor! pop Posted April 3, 2012 Share #12 Posted April 3, 2012 ...except that the one in Wikimedia has a focusing lever ! So does the one under discussion. The fourth image clearly shows the lever protruding from the helical slot. Or are you referring to something else?
