Guest Jim 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Share #1 Posted April 1, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought a nice used Digilux 2 and understand that it will only accept up to 2 GB SD cards. I have a standard Sandisk 2 GB card for it, but would like to know if getting either a Sandisk Extreme III or Ultra II is worth the extra cost as far as gaining noticeable performance, upload speed, etc.? I've read 4-5 year old comments/reviews saying Sandisk Extreme II, 2 GB cards work well in Digilux 2's but apparently Extreme II cards aren't made any longer - only "Extreme III". Are the 2 GB Ex. III's and/or Ultra II or III's compatible with the D2 and if so, will I gain any noticeable speed by using them with such an old camera, or should I just keep using the regular 2 GB SD card? (I will seldom, if ever, use the "burst" function). Thanks.

dugby Posted April 1, 2012 Share #2 Posted April 1, 2012 Over the years , the pirate SD card makers targetted the Sandisk Extreme III product as it was the most expensive SD 2GB and was good profit. How do I know this....... I got stung, and it's well documented on ebay.com I do have a couple of genuine Extreme III cards, but now I only buy the "white" Toshiba cards, which perform the same as my EXtreme III. Tietje Posted April 1, 2012 Share #3 Posted April 1, 2012 I have two Sandisk 2GB Ultras which I bought from Tesco and Harvey Norman's (which I would like to think purchase legitimate cards) I found that once formatted in my Digilux 2 they couldn't be read. I had to reformat them in my Panasonic G1 to make them work in my Digilux 2. Coupled with the fact that my MacBook Pro card reader wouldn't read them either I bought 2 2GB KIngstons (basic model) and I've had no more trouble. I can do all the things I couldn't do with the Sandisks. Hope that helps.
Guest Jim 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Share #4 Posted April 1, 2012 Ok, it sounds like just the regular, "non-ultra" and "non extreme" 2 GB cards are the only SD cards that will work properly in a Digilux 2, correct? Do any other D2 users have any hands on experience regarding which cards will work?
agrokid Posted April 10, 2012 Share #5 Posted April 10, 2012 My D2 gives a lot of "write errors" with a modern 2GB Sandisk Class4 SD card. I haven't tried to reformat this card. Also, my D2 wants nothing to do with a 2GB Sandisk Ultra Class4 SD. Most reliable, so far, has been an older 1GB Kingston ElitePro 50X SD bought on eBay. It seems to me the card is the Achilles heel of the D2.

Jim, I suggest you stick with your existing SD cards. Faster cards do not translate into speed gains with older digital processors.
stuny Posted April 10, 2012 Share #7 Posted April 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Regular Sandisc 2 GB and Ultra Sanddisc 2 GB work fine in my D2.
Azeredo Posted April 11, 2012 Share #8 Posted April 11, 2012 I have 2 Hoodman RAWSD2GB class 6 that performs well. Go to leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1) - Page 1 of 3 and see what Thorsten Overgaard says about SD Card to D2. Hope this helps
rjans Posted April 11, 2012 Share #9 Posted April 11, 2012 I'm using 2GB Emtec SD cards without any problems. These are normal SD cards. Newer types (SDHC and others) will not work with the D2. Best
Jaybob Posted April 11, 2012 Share #10 Posted April 11, 2012 I used normal 2GB Sony SD Class 4 and 2GB SanDisk SD Class 2 cards without issue, write errors, or complications. They were under 10 dollars each. "Ultra" and "Exteme" cards seem sort of silly on this VERY slow, but still very capable, camera.
agrokid Posted April 14, 2012 Share #11 Posted April 14, 2012 As I said in an earlier post, my D2 gives write errors with a modern 2GB Sandisk Class 4 SD card. The errors happen when I use highest quality jpegs and try to use Burst or Bracket. As long as I stick to single shot the Class 4 card is OK. I would be interested to know, from those who have posted saying Class 4 is OK, whether they have used Burst and Bracket successfully. If they have then maybe there's something wrong with my camera. Ruhayat Posted April 15, 2012 Share #12 Posted April 15, 2012 When I was still using my Digilux 2, I did try a Sandisk Extreme card instead of my usual Sandisk Ultra. If there were any gains in camera write performance, I didn't notice it. But the Extreme was a bit faster when writing to computer, though, so that's a performance gain in a way.
