c.poulton Posted March 30, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) A somewhat worrying thought crossed my mind this morning as I was daydreaming about Leica announcing a new film camera on 10 May - what if Leica abandon their film camera production soon (as many pundits seem to expect) with the release of new digital bodies. Do you think this is at all likely? Christian
Advertisement Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Hi c.poulton, Take a look here Leica Announcement on 10 May - Film Cameras?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted March 30, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2012 Not very likely. They still sell and make them lots of money, per unit. They haven't spent a bean on R&D on them for over 10 years, and there's no chance that they will ever update them. They pretty much build them to order in batches now anyway and there are still daft people like me who buy them.
c.poulton Posted March 30, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted March 30, 2012 Very good point Andy! Although I guess that Leica could just offer film bodies under the al-la-carte option only though... From my own personal viewpoint, I have been saving up for an MP for a while now and have almost got the funds in place, so it would be a shame if Leica no longer produced film bodies. :-( Christian
Messsucherkamera Posted March 30, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2012 I read somewhere that in Japan, 80% of new Leica M cameras sold are film cameras, with that figure being 20% for the U.S. and western European markets. I would think that for a company to walk away from a revenue stream of that size would not be a wise decision by any measure. @ Andy: If by "daft" you mean passionate, then yes - you are indeed daft as am I and thousands of others who frequent this forum. As I tell my wife, M cameras are a quality of life issue.

That's pretty much as it is now. Even if you want a bog-standard M7 or MP, you have to wait until a suitable batch of alc examples are being built. wattsy Posted March 30, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 30, 2012 That's pretty much as it is now. Even if you want a bog-standard M7 or MP, you have to wait until a suitable batch of alc examples are being built. The bog standard body now has a pretty daft price. So much so, that you may as well order an à la carte body.
