jedisdl Posted February 28, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm on my way to Guatemala for a photo trip. Most shots will be daylight and include colorful clothing. My concern is how often does the IR problem occur. RE: wide angle lenses, I have a 24 ASPH without any filter and a 28 f2 ASPH with an IR filter. The photographic subjects on this trip are best shot with a wide angle lens, so I would normally use the 24 on the M8, but I'm not sure re: the trade-off between having an IR filter or the wider angle. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Advertisement Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Hi jedisdl, Take a look here 24 ASPH without IR filter or 28 ASPH with IR filter?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted February 28, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 28, 2007 Steve, my experience has been that in bright sunlight the magenta effect can be seen in almost every shot - it's _that_ bad. So I wouldn't even contemplate a trip like yours without a filter. If however you intend to convert to b&w then you can get away without a filter, but for colour work I've found them to be essential. LJL Posted February 28, 2007 Share #3 Posted February 28, 2007 Without any firmware update yet, the issue becomes one of shoot without a filter, and try to manage the magenta with the profiles from Jamie Roberts, or shoot with a filter and try to manage the cyan drift that you will get with both if you had filters on them. B/W is pretty much not an issue, but does nothing for the bright colors you could enjoy. Personally, I would risk shooting without the filter and working with Jamie's profiles over dealing with the cyan drift, unless you are prepared to do some Panotools/PTtools corrections on a lot of images when you get back, plus using Edmund's profiles for filtered shots, since nobody else is correcting for that shift either yet. If you are shooting JPEGs, you are even more stuck, but using the filter and at least correcting for vignetting with coding will be a better option, I would think. Sort of damned if you do or damned if you don't. Sorry. I am facing the same sort of issue shooting with a CV 15 and a Zeiss 25/2.8. If I filter, I have color balance and vignetting issues to deal with, and if I do not filter, I have magenta to deal with, but at least have some recourse with Jamie's profiles. LJL Posted February 28, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2007 UPDATE: Seems that firmware v1.091 is available for downloading. May be worth seeing what is included or not in the latest version with respect to cyan cast, etc., as this might help solve your problem for which lens to use. LJ P.S. Now you see it, now you do not! Seems that v. 1.091 was up for a while, but is now gone......hmmm.
jedisdl Posted February 28, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted February 28, 2007 Thanks for the helpful comments. It seems that just staying with the 28 (with a filter) is safest. Using Jamie's profiles could be another answer, but correcting the cyan corners from the 28 seems easier. As mentioned, the wispy1.091 could be an answer, but I worry about not having much time before leaving (Friday) in case 1.091 has some problem. Perhaps by tomorrow, they'll be more infomation on 1.091. Thanks Steve
scott kirkpatrick Posted February 28, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 28, 2007 1.091 did not offer any of the extra vignetting corrections. That's for 1.10, which appears to have been delayed. It's worth getting, simply because there are lots of less famous problems that are getting attended to, such as some of the situations that lead to different amounts of lockup. There are claims but no strong proof, that automatic white balance is improved. scott
