A few years ago when the new Summilux 50 was reviewed (nice comparison between elmar, nocti, new Lux and Cron) in LFI Leica stated that it would be a vast expense to advance the Summicron 50. So i gues they let it be as it is. What istn't so bad either, is it?

The review was in LFI 4/2006.

The problem is that it would mean a radical design change. The Summicron 50 is really at the theoretical limit of its design. However, it might be possible to make a one-stop-slower Summilux 50 asph, as Leica has gone that way before.

FWIW, about 8 months ago I spoke with a London based Leica Premier dealer who had been told by Leica (source not checked) that a 50 summicron asph was "coming out". Admittedly, this is a bit of a "friend of a friend of a friend" type conversation.
