Leitax users - consider the "ante" well and truly "upped" - D800 specs

Actually it was the 2000+ posts on the Fuji X100 that prompted me to express a member opinion this time and of course there is no discussion on using R glass on the D800 as yet since its unofficial anyway.

I know all about using Leica R lenses on Nikons etc (I have a Nikon dSLR too). And yes of course I saw that you initiated this particular thread. No Leica content in the thread yet (that ought to prompt some ;))

Umpire's decision accepted of course, Andy. No further suggestion from me then.

Geoff, you are way off the mark. Being in the same boat as Andy, I appreciate the efforts of all the Forum members that try to bring forth new information regarding solutions for R lenses. Let's face facts, Leica abandoned us. If you don't to want to address that issue, that's fine, but your attempt to circumvent others is just out of line. We don't need to be told what we can discuss here. If that's an irritant, than I suggest you just close your eyes.

Not that many impressive images to be found. Hard til tell what is the lens, the sensor or the raw converter.

I wonder how long time it will take before one can use Lightroom for the D800E files. How long does it usually take for Adobe to catch up?

Given the D800 comes first and the D800E comes later that might help.

Dunno if it has been posted here's a large tiff file to download:

NIKON D 800

IMO a steal for a $3K cam. Looking forward to getting mine soon.

Still looks mushy to me at 100%, but as I said before, that may well be specific lenses or operators not performing up to the sensor's capabilities.

It may look like a big leap to people who've been shooting 12-Mpixel D700s or D3s - but, sorry!, 12 Mpixels on full-frame became the "low-rent district" for resolution a long time ago (Canon 1DsMk2 - Sept 2004 - 16 Mpixels).

I do expect (or at least hope) we'll eventually see samples that really show what 36 Mpixels can do. But they ain't gonna be with a 24-70 zoom, they'll be with a Nikkor prime or Zeiss ZF or Leitaxed Leica APO, at their best apertures.

And I agree that WHEN THAT HAPPENS, it will be a steal at $3000. At least until a Canon 5D3 or Sony A--- matches it - at $2500. ;)

I always look at preliminary samples with loads of salt.....waiting for more images online.

I will pick up the camera when it hits the shores irregardless knowing fully well it will be a hit, whether it is good for my needs/wants becomes more irrelevant when I can sell it immediately for maybe even a tiny profit haha...

The supply will definitely be unable to keep up with demand...

Courtesy of Charll on the S2 forum, some examples that seem to show off the D800 better (IMHO):

Nikon D800 Sample Photos Are Mind Blowing

Don't know what the difference is - better photographers? Better processing? Better lenses? One of them is a duplicate of an image already seen (trees and mountain) - otherwise new.

While I'm impressed with what Nikon (and Sony?) has achieved here, I'm still leaning towards a Canon 1dx and snap-on adapters for my remaining R glass. I want to wait and see.

I sold my D3 and all my Nikkor glass. I've also just sold quite a lot of my R glass--19 Elmarit, a 28, 35 Summilux, 100 APO and 180 APO Elmarit... but I still have a 35 f2, a 50 Summilux and 50 Summicron, and of course, the 80 R Lux, which I'm not going to part with anytime soon.

I've been very impressed by the overall package of the 1dx, despite its lower resolution. So I want to see what both the D800 and the 1dx files look like, and whether the focus confirming Canon adapters I have work with the new body...

Shouldn't your 1DX comparison Jamie, logically be with Nikon's hi-speed, full-size body equivalent - the D4? Rather than the small bodied hi-res D800.

Logically you're right, but logically the D800 comparison should be to whatever Canon brings out to replace the 5d2--but they're not there yet.

But for me, and understand this is really just my opinion for the mix of features I'm looking for, the 1dx has "enough" resolution (18mp, just like my M9) and so will hit a sweet spot with ISO and resolution that's even beyond the D4.

From what I've seen so far, too, I'm preferring the colour from the 1dx. Early days, I know, but I got sort of sick of fighting with the colour from the D3 to tell you the truth, especially in skin tones. Some of the latest stuff I've seen from the 1dx looks exceptionally good (and not like Canon / Nikon skin tones at all). I know Canon has been working on a brand new colour engine for their EOS 300 cinema camera / RED competitor, and I'm hoping some of that colour mojo makes it into their flagship dSLR.

I also personally prefer a pro body for the work I do. So... to sum up:

  • pro body with resolution and hi ISO= 1dx or D4
  • resolution nod to the 1dx over the D4
  • colour nod to the 1dx over the D4 (but it's so early it's still tough to tell)
  • can use Leica R lenses with an easily removable adapter, which is different than the Leitax (and I have the adapters) = nod to the 1Dx
  • dare I say this too? while a main reason for getting one of these would be to use Leica R glass (both for pro photography and personal movie projects), it's not the only reason... and I much prefer the 85 1.2L and 50 1.2L to any prime currently available in those focal lengths for Nikon... advantage, Canon...

I saw the sample images on the Nikon website and despite having high hopes I was really disappointed. I had always assumed that soft mushy haze on Canon and Nikons was from the AA filter but I guess it turns out it's the lenses. That first library photo for example in the other set. At 100% it looks really average. Soft, hazy mush. I thought it was maybe shot at higher iso but it's at ISO 100. Low noise is nice but where is the detail and micro contrast? The shot of the geisha is muddy. I don't think the samples live up to the hype or the marketing of the AAless 800e at all. The only difference I see are the files are bigger. Bigger, mushy and out resolved lenses.

  • 2 weeks later...

I’ve ordered my Nikon D800E (sold my D3 way too cheep), to take care of my 14-24/2.8 don’t feel lonely(sorry Leica). But still waiting for a Ricoh GXR M-module in 16Mp for my M-lenses(sorry again Leica).

I have just ordered a 5d Mark 3. I plan to use my remaining R lenses on it with the latest focus-confirming MF adapters; my 35 f2, 50 f2 and 1.4 and 80R Lux will all clear the mirror evidently.

One question is that it appears that the latest Canons (7d, 5d3 and 1dx) have all had new, LCD overlay screens, which apparently means the focusing screens are no longer interchangeable.

So we'll see if I can focus manual lenses with the new camera. I couldn't with a 7D, fwiw, but then someone said the manual focus system was really only meant for f2.8 lenses.

Otherwise, the 5d looks quite formidable as an AF dSLR too and Canon has apparently improved the colour in the 1dx and 5d3 too (which is a big thing for me).

We'll see if this is where my R glass lives :)

FWIW if money were no object I would still have an S2. That system really is the nicest dSLR I have shot to date, and I love the big pixels and the lenses. More on that still coming :)

Well I had to say it. Yet another camera that costs much less than the digital M with superior performance. When on Earth will we see a full frame camera that is at this price range with this kind of sensor, performance, etc,, . I do not care who would make it, just give us a camera body at a decent price with this performance to mount what many consider the finest lenses ever made. Why is this so hard in 2012? Every few months I have this thought about dumping my $20,000 investment in Leica lenses and bodies and getting a Nikon like this with new Zeiss glass, etc,,,. The only problem is I love rangefinders and the small Size of M lenses. So as they say "where's the beef". In terms of new technology for M lenses. DSLR envy should not happen to us with all of the money we have spent on Leica M glass, R glass, etc,,,.

Well, the good news is: there is no reason why we should not have such a sensor in a future M camera, neither technical nor financial. It just depends on when Leica can get hold of one - but I think it is inevitable that they eventually will.
