stevelap Posted February 7, 2012 Share #61 Â Posted February 7, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well my ante has just been upped:). A provisional order for a D800E in April is in with my dealer - convertible to a D800 if necessary, subject to some research. Â For me a DSLR is not in competition with an M or the future Leica EVIL (it might be competition for the S2 in some way but I'm not in that market), rather it's a different tool to be used when appropriate. andybarton Posted February 7, 2012 Author Share #62 Â Posted February 7, 2012 I have to say the examples posted by Nikon are amazing. Â Maybe I AM tempted at only two and a half grand. That's half the price of an M9.
phancj Posted February 7, 2012 Share #63 Â Posted February 7, 2012 It'll be a wait but the price will typically drop by a couple of hundred dollars, but not so soon though. Â I'll go for it straightaway....my nikon is too looonnggg in the tooth. Â Yes, the lady in kimono amongst other photos are outstanding... stevelap Posted February 7, 2012 Share #64 Â Posted February 7, 2012 Go on, you know you need (well, want;)) one Andy:). Â Seriously, it should be a great digital body for Leitax adapted R lenses.
andybarton Posted February 7, 2012 Author Share #65 Â Posted February 7, 2012 They won't drop in price any time soon. D700s are still selling for what they were over 2 years ago.
andybarton Posted February 7, 2012 Author Share #66 Â Posted February 7, 2012 In the meantime, I have a brand new X1 just charged in my pocket, so I think I might just take it for a walk round the block

phancj Posted February 7, 2012 Share #68 Â Posted February 7, 2012 They won't drop in price any time soon. D700s are still selling for what they were over 2 years ago. Â The D700 sells for US$2,400 here now brand new. Was over $3000 when launched. Â I didnt know you got an X1 Andy, thought you will be the last person buying it haha.... Â Thats a fun camera, I still use mine often! Â CJ
gdb Posted February 7, 2012 Share #69 Â Posted February 7, 2012 Reading the specifications of the new D800E, I can't help thinking that Nikon achieved what could have been the Leica R10...
phancj Posted February 7, 2012 Share #70 Â Posted February 7, 2012 A buddy of mine has said many lenses will be outresolved by the sensor....any thoughts on this anyone? Â Good to know if this is an issue for at least some lenses... Â CJ
stunsworth Posted February 7, 2012 Share #71  Posted February 7, 2012 I have to say the examples posted by Nikon are amazing  The level of fine detail is excellent, but I was expecting more interesting photographs. From a photographic perspective I'd rate them as poor. I was expecting more when I clicked on the link.
stunsworth Posted February 7, 2012 Share #72 Â Posted February 7, 2012 A buddy of mine has said many lenses will be outresolved by the sensor....any thoughts on this anyone? Â I'm sure that's correct. If I bought one it would be to use with Leica R lenses.
phancj Posted February 7, 2012 Share #73 Â Posted February 7, 2012 I think the photos are to show the level of detail,etc.... Â Not composition. Â CJ
phancj Posted February 7, 2012 Share #74 Â Posted February 7, 2012 I'm sure that's correct. If I bought one it would be to use with Leica R lenses. Â Some of the nikkors are excellent. Â Like the 24 1.4g, 35 1.4g, 85 1.4g, even the 70-200 VR2. I am not sure how they rate against leica lenses but am sure they are super competent. Â Even the 50 1.4 works superbly, at least from the samples Nikon posted. Â But this is a leica forum so I guess we'll stick to discussing leica lenses on the camera. stunsworth Posted February 7, 2012 Share #75  Posted February 7, 2012 I think the photos are to show the level of detail,etc.... Not composition  There's nothing to stop a company doing both - otherwise they may as well take a few shots of test charts.  The examples I looked at all had limited dynamic range, I would have liked to see something more challenging for the sensor. No doubt they will appear in time.
stunsworth Posted February 7, 2012 Share #76  Posted February 7, 2012 Some of the nikkors are excellent  I'm sure they are, but the OP said that many wouldn't be up to supporting that number of pixels, I think he's probably correct in saying that. Many doesn't mean all.
Peter H Posted February 7, 2012 Share #77 Â Posted February 7, 2012 If the camera turns out to be a great advance on the D700/D3 range that it replaces, won't it be almost all to do with the sensor? (Setting aside video capability). Â If that is the case I think I'll wait till a similar sensor is available in an M body, which I would find infinitely preferable to another SLR with all its drawbacks, not least of which is its grotesque size and weight. Â If I were a sports or action/event photographer I think I'd prefer a smaller pixel count, like the D4, but in the D7/800 size body. Â So this has little appeal for me. andybarton Posted February 7, 2012 Author Share #78  Posted February 7, 2012 The D700 sells for US$2,400 here now brand new. Was over $3000 when launched.  My wife paid £1750 for mine at Calumet. They are on Calumet's website for £1750 now.
stevelap Posted February 7, 2012 Share #79 Â Posted February 7, 2012 Good grief, there I was enjoying this little D800 diversion then, bam, four posts from you Steve and I'm depressed and in need of a stiff drink;). Peter H hasn't helped either. This thread is about using adapted R lenses on a third-party digital body, in the absence of a Leica made 'R solution', not DSLR to M comparisons.
