Keith (M) Posted November 18, 2011 Share #1 Posted November 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I mostly use a yellow filter for my b&w films and now that I have acquired an Elmarit 5cm f3.5 (1951), I am looking to see what filter to use. Leica Wiki etc tell me that filters are A36 (clamp-on?) and I have read that most people use a SNHCO adaptor so that a standard E39 filter can be used. Am I on the right track and if so, how difficult is it to acquire a SNHCO?
Advertisement Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 Hi Keith (M), Take a look here Filter for Elmar 5cm f3.5?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted November 18, 2011 Share #2 Posted November 18, 2011 Keith, Walz made 22mm(?) diameter filters which screw into the black ring around the front lens element. They occasionally come up on that online auction site and I managed to acquire a set of 5 marked "Walz for Elmar" in a clear plastic storage case and fine leather cover quite cheaply a few months ago. My set has light green, red, orange blue, and yellow filters. The filters allow you to adjust the Elmar's aperture without having to remove the filter. Pete. Keith (M) Posted November 18, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted November 18, 2011 Peter, Thanks for the info. The thread on my 1951 Elmar (Ser No. 904xxx) looks to be circa 19mm (i.e tiny). I find it somewhat difficult to visualise a filter that would not interfere with the aperture adjuster, especially if an adaptor is used!? farnz Posted November 18, 2011 Share #4 Posted November 18, 2011 Keith, My filter thread is the same - I only roughly measured the outer diameter of the filter. As you can see from the photo below, the aperture tab (not visible) can still be adjusted with a fingernail as before. Pete. Welcome, dear visitor! thomas_schertel Posted November 23, 2011 Share #8 Posted November 23, 2011 Within the A-36 filters, the sun shades FISON and FIKUS, the SOOGZ-adapter you can use the little ring VOOLA. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.de/index.php/Datei:FISON_VOOLA.jpg Then you can set the diaphragma by turning the parts mentioned above. yours sincerely Thomas Keith (M)

fWord Posted November 24, 2011 Share #10 Posted November 24, 2011 There's another SOOGZ here, and slightly cheaper (no association with vendor): Leica Leitz SOOGZ Adapter Filter E39 an Objektiv A36 Filteradapter E 39 an A36 | eBay I bought one recently to fit a lens similar to the old Elmar 90/4, but paid a little more than this one here. If I didn't need to use the IR cut filters, I wouldn't have bothered with the SOOGZ and just used the A36 clip on filters. Keith (M)

I note that JC's filter has a black rim whereas mine and the other Walz's I've seen are silver chrome. It may be Leitz original that I've never seen before. Pete. Keith (M) Posted November 25, 2011 Author Share #17 Posted November 25, 2011 (edited) It can be a FICAT Luigi non ridere, esiste. Thanks! FICAT is listed in the Leica WiKi as:- FICAT No. 1 light yellow filter; screw-on type F Whereas I would prefer a medium yellow and the corresponding item is listed as: FICOM No. 2 medium yellow filter; screw-on type F So, if 'Type F' refers to a (circa) 19mm thread, then a FICOM is what I shall try to find! But there again, a search just now on Google for FICOM turned up 'The 1931 Leitz Camera Catalogue' which shows I could really need either a FIRMY (No. 2 yellow) or as an alternative the FIRHE (No. 1 yellow). Decisions, decisions... Many thanks for all of the inputs. Edited November 25, 2011 by Keith (M) added Google search info.

farnz Posted December 3, 2011 Share #19 Posted December 3, 2011 Here's a curio I found on Don Goldberg's spare site. It's a ring designed to allow the aperture on a 50/3.5 Elmar to be adjusted with a large filter on. (DAG's part number is DAGMS17.) Pete.
