Prem Posted November 15, 2011 Share #1 Posted November 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today my biggest fear became true; the IR-absorbing cover glass of my M9 has broken for the second time!!! First time happened when the camera was only 2 weeks old. Today it broke again, camera is now 2 years old!! Has somebody already had the same expierence? Prem Welcome, dear visitor! bocaburger Posted November 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted November 16, 2011 I sure do hope Leica plans to stockpile a whole mess of sensors in case whoever bought Kodak's sensor division doesn't keep on making them!
Alnitak Posted November 16, 2011 Share #5 Posted November 16, 2011 Well this is disappointing. My understanding was that it was an isolated problem that was identified and corrected. Perhaps your sensor was replaced with another faulty one before Leica/Kodak had figured out what was going on and addressed it? When was your camera repaired the first time? Prem Posted November 16, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted November 16, 2011 Thank you Stephan for your kind words. Alnitak the camera was repaired end of november 2009, precisely 2 years ago! Maybe they used indeed another faulty sensor, right now I'm very disappointed ! Prem
jaapv Posted November 16, 2011 Share #7 Posted November 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Interesting- It think they did indeed replace it before they found the root cause - that was at a later date, so the replacement sensor may well have been from the faulty series. archi4 Posted November 16, 2011 Share #8 Posted November 16, 2011 Jaap There are some late serial numbers in the list of cracked sensor cover glasses, so it does seem to be a continuing story.
Alnitak Posted November 16, 2011 Share #9 Posted November 16, 2011 JaapThere are some late serial numbers in the list of cracked sensor cover glasses, so it does seem to be a continuing story. My understanding is that the camera serial numbers are not sequential, so there is no such thing as "late" serial number. Leica issued a statement that indicated that they had identified the source of the problem and that it was limited to a batch of sensors with a flaw. bocaburger Posted November 16, 2011 Share #10 Posted November 16, 2011 (edited) I know Leica said the numbers aren't sequential, but I never bought it, not entirely. I can see where they might not go in exact sequence if the assembler has a box full of hot-shoes and just reaches in and grabs one each time a camera comes down the line. Sorry to the believers, but I'll bet my bottom dollar if there's a 1000 or more spread between numbers that the bigger number is the newer camera, assuming it's the same color. Leica always produced chromes and blacks in different batch-runs. More likely is that whatever manufacturing or final-assembly screw-up occurred in the 1st batch of cracking sensors could have occurred again in a later batch. Stranger things have happened. Bill W Posted November 17, 2011 Share #11 Posted November 17, 2011 Hopefully you have contacted Leica. Let us know what their response is. Unless you have thrown your M9 against a wall, this really should not happen
250swb Posted November 17, 2011 Share #12 Posted November 17, 2011 On average over a few years the higher serial numbers will be the newer camera, but there is no way to tell in small serial number groups which is which. But when you go from 380xxx to 400xxx I would have thought it likely to be a big enough jump to be a later camera, and I think we had one in the 400xxx range reported on LUF. But I agree with Jaap that if Prem's camera was an early failure the sensor could well have been replaced with another potentially faulty sensor at the time. Yet the number of cracked sensors reported on LUF alone has surely gone well beyond the 'forty' that Leica thought they had identified. And of course people are reporting cracked sensors on the S2 as well. Steve
Prem Posted November 22, 2011 Author Share #13 Posted November 22, 2011 The camera is on it's way to Solms. Leica arranged a UPS courier to collect it at my place. Let's hope Leica will repair this under guaranty as I certainly did not smash my camera against a wall !! Prem
digitalpowershot Posted November 22, 2011 Share #14 Posted November 22, 2011 They will change the sensor for free, regardless of warranty. Don't worry.

Prem Posted November 25, 2011 Author Share #16 Posted November 25, 2011 Today I received the confirmation from Leica, that they will: replace the sensor replace engraving on the camera-body adjust sensor adjust range finder clean range finder adjustment of all parts cleaning end control All will be done without any costs! I must say I'm very happy with the reaction of Leica and their service. There was no discussion whatsoever, they immidiately came with this solution. Again Leica service did not disappoint me! Everyday Im checking the online repair tracking at the Leica website. So far it's saying - 25-11-2011 reparatur in Bearbeitung ! Does anyone have any idea how much time Leica needs for repairing a cracked sensor cover glass?
