Does M9-P have the black(empty) frame problem?

The only thing that annoys me with my M9 is the black frame I get between every 30 to 50 shots. Leica claimed this might be an SD card compatibility problem but as far as I know they were proven wrong. Do anyone know if this hardware , software , firmware, or mechanical problem continues with M9-P?

How exactly was Leica proven wrong? Can you please explain in more detail?

I have never heard of this problem with the M9 (except for leaving the lens cap on) and have never experienced it with my M9-P.

I don't have an M9, but I obviously follow M9 issues very closely, and I have never heard of this particular problem before.

The issue has been discussed here before.

Last time, I read about it has been somewhen around the end of June, just after the first weeks with my M9.

I came over a thread, describing the issue and remembered a frame, I had on my SD card from day one with the camera, I was certain, was no lens cap shot or otherwise strangely taken (I don't use lens caps other than for transportation, while in the bag, and the blank frame has been within a sequence of otherwise good exposed photographs.

Recalling this issue, it happened so seldom and so difficult to track in this regard, that I didn't care, to go after it.

I get black frames quite often and sometimes but not always the shutter sound is strange before the black frame.

Exactly, there is always this strange sound when the black frame occurs.

You know it right away.

Btw I have reported the black frame issue here in this forum at least on two occasions.

Where have you been, guys ?

Anyhow, in the end Leica did replace my camera.

Best regards.

How closely?

I think this has been discussed many times. I have had a black frame or two early on, and I think Jaap even had an idea of what caused it. In my case it seemed to be a finger glitch that has never been repeated (and yes, I use a Sandisk card), but I think other people have had a more regular occurence.

I've only had black frames when I've left the lens cap on, or put the camera back in the bag switched on, or taken an image slower than 1/30 second (see page 140 of the manual - the camera automatically takes a black exposure to digitally remove noise).

I only use San Disk cards, but them I'm not a high volume shooter (my head is still in film - I subconsciously believe that each frame cots money).

In which case it shouldn't have appeared on the memory card. The black frame is an image that is recorded with nothing on it, not a long exposure in the camera bag etc.

Is that the case? I've never looked. I had always assumed that the long exposure, noise reduction frame was black (actually, that's what the manual says). I'd similarly assumed that it got stored and downloaded. When I get my M9 back, I'll check.

There seem to be two issues commented on above - one is black frames on the SD card, and the other is the sound of the camera making an additional actuation. I'm pretty sure the latter is for reducing noise in long (+1/30) exposures.

I'm not entirely sure how blank exposures on the SD card being downloaded is an "empty frame problem".

I'm probably missing something here, so I will quit now.

Cheers

John

The M cameras' long-exposure noise correction is a second exposure made with no image and subtracted from the image-bearing exposure. IOW, since it's a blank exposure, anything recorded is noise and can be removed from the original to improve image quality. Only one exposure is recorded.

Getting a black exposure with no obvious cause (e.g. lenscap left on) is not normal.

I raised this 'black frame' issue some month ago. It did not happen to me as often as Patric's M9, but still worring. The shutter sound is very diferent when this hapens. As the M9 is still under warranty it was sent to Leica for repair, but is not back as yet. Couple of weeks ago I got a Ricoh GXR with A12 Leica mount module as a back up to M9. What a pleasure to use this Ricoh GXR with M lenses.

This is very strange, and is probably a short in either the shutter switch or shutter motor circuit, causing a "partial exposure". Definitely not common and something that needs to be sent for repair if happening. I, like the majority here, have never had this occur.

As for the GXR it is apparently a very nice camera, albeit one with a highly cropped sensor, so not suitable for me as a backup to my M9.

Ricoh GXR with A12 module (Leica M mount lenses) does have a APS-C size sensor, so the crop factor is 1.5, not that bad at all. 35 mm become a 52 mm lens act. I would not call it 'highly cropped sensor'. Yes some of the other GXR modules have very small sensors in deed.
