pig882009 Posted November 1, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted November 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a brand new M9 15 months ago. I am not a professional photographer so I only use my M9 during weekends. Â My question is, do you need to "serivce" your M9 just like you would have your vehicle serviced every year. digitalpowershot Posted November 1, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted November 1, 2011 I bought a brand new M9 15 months ago. I am not a professional photographer so I only use my M9 during weekends. Â My question is, do you need to "serivce" your M9 just like you would have your vehicle serviced every year. Â I had my Canon 1DMKII 7 years long and it did not see a service once. As I sold it, the happy buyer thought it was new, so happy was he about the condition of the camera (not professionaly used). Â I guess that every 5years the camera should be serviced though... If you do the upgrade Leica will do a service anyway (CLA).
bocaburger Posted November 1, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted November 1, 2011 My opinion is unless there's a good reason, I don't see the point in prophylactic servicing. In fact, having got my new M9 from the factory with the rangefinder woefully out of line, I can't be assured it wouldn't come back from service in worse shape than when I sent it, and that I'd have to go through self-adjusting the rangefinder all over again. Â I suppose it also has a lot to do with what each owner feels capable of doing in terms of field servicing. I'm at home adjusting the rangefinder (close-up adjustment as well) and cleaning the sensor glass. There would have to be more than 4-5 dead pixels before I would consider cloning so tedious so as to warrant paying to have them mapped-out (I still think it's shameful Leica hasn't put a hot/dead-pixel mapping app in firmware. My "ancient" Epson R-D1 had one in the "s" firmware update.) Â I also suppose I might consider "routine" service if I subjected my M9 to "severe duty" such as operation in very dusty/sandy conditions, or if it suffered a significant impact (even if no functional damage was evident). Otherwise, I see only one point at which I would consider a "routine" service: at the point where the warranty is set to expire, to secure another year against catastrophic, expensive failures like the sensor, shutter, or other major component. Double Negative Posted November 1, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted November 1, 2011 "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Â In other words, no. You don't need periodic maintenance on the M9. Even the ol' "CLA" isn't needed so much anymore since most mechanical aspects have been replaced with electronic components. Â Basically wait until something breaks - then get it fixed. kaiwing Posted November 2, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted November 2, 2011 If you see your M9 is doing what you ask for, you don't have to service. I use it every day but don't see any problems since I bought it in April.
farnz Posted November 2, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted November 2, 2011 Apart from changing the air in the tyres every 1,000 miles your M9 shouldn't need a CLA (clean lubricate and adjust) for many years. Keeping the sensor clean and changing the battery is all you need to do regularly. Â Pete.

Paulus Posted November 8, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted November 8, 2011 I bought a brand new M9 15 months ago. I am not a professional photographer so I only use my M9 during weekends. Â My question is, do you need to "serivce" your M9 just like you would have your vehicle serviced every year. Â A sensor cleaning every now and then would be in order. Most of my Leica and Nikon camera's didn't need much service as long as I treated them properly. I occasionally clean them with a soft, mild damp cloth. As long as you use the camera on a regular base, every to week for instance, it will last for 15 years without service is my estimate.
