Was the D2/LC1 lens changed during production?

While cruising the Panasonic online parts store to purchase some repair parts for my LC-1, I noticed they list two lenses for the camera, with similar but different part numbers and priced the same:

VXW0659-1 LENS UNIT-W/O CCD 460.44

VXW0659 LENS UNIT-W/O CCD 460.44

Was the D2/LC1 lens ever changed during the production run or updated subsequently? Does anyone know anything about this?

FWIW, I was actually surprised by the price of the lens, especially as the main circuit board sells for nearly as much. As I recall, a replacement LCD was something like $238, which likewise makes the lens seem like a bargain...

I dont know the exact answer, but am very familiar with this issue. It is very common during manufacture, a modification change gets implemented by Engineering. The usual annotation is to vary the part number with a 'dash one', which you have observed.

Next is the trickier bit, this can have a co-requisite change in another part, and maybe in a firmware change too.

This is why one should always leave technology repairs to knowlegable service centers.....

Finally vendors have to accomodate the burden cost of spare parts storage over many years, some companies, calculate this 11 years. Thats why the sum of the cost of spare parts (without labour costs) always exceeds the initial purchase price.

my LC-1 is a late copy, serial beginning 'I', and the writing on the lens front is different.

at top

LEICA

inverted at bottom

DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 1:2.0-2.4/7-22.5 ASPH

I have noticed earlier more common examples are different

what did the lens cost Jeffrey? 460.44?

The lens on mine says the same thing and, so far as I can tell (it's worn down quite a bit), the serial number on the body starts with "G."

Yes, US$460.44 ... truth be told, given that the retail price of the L1/D3's lens is very nearly $1200, I would have guessed the price of the LC1's lens -- especially as a repair part -- to be closer to $6-700, given the camera's original retail price. Unfortunately, bargain and great performer though it may be, I can't think of anything other than the LC1 with which to use it!

(And as a related aside, I successfully opened mine up and tightened the mounting screws for the lens ... took just a single cross-head jeweler's screwdriver and 20 minutes from start to finish!)

Maybe this difference is an L1 v. D2 thing, as I just checked on eBay and every LC-1 lens I could see was labeled the same as ours and every D2 lens was labeled differently. Hmm...

Rob, isn't the LH one in the 2-cam pic an L-1?

Brian, yes it is, I grabbed this pic from the net to compare sizes of LC-1 and L1

I later noticed that the LC-1 had different lens script, it seems its a D2 lens
