Michael Hiles Posted October 30, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) This picture was made in the colonnade designed by Bernini that surrounds St Peter’s Square in the Vatican. An amazing aspect of this place is that it is huge, but not overbearing. The scale of everything seems to be perfect.
Advertisement Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Hi Michael Hiles, Take a look here Cool Marble. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pauledell Posted October 31, 2011 Share #2 Posted October 31, 2011 Michael, An excellent shot with great composition (I like the way the people are lined on each side of the walk between the colonnades), the marvelous tones, depth and sharpness. Michael Hiles Posted October 31, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted October 31, 2011 Thanks Paul. It is nice that it is a place for people as well as a sterile architectural exercise. It is all very impressive.
stuny Posted October 31, 2011 Share #4 Posted October 31, 2011 Michael - Lovely. Though it would be virtually impossible to do, I'd love to see a purely architectural shot of it without tourists.
Michael Hiles Posted October 31, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted October 31, 2011 Michael - Lovely. Though it would be virtually impossible to do, I'd love to see a purely architectural shot of it without tourists. Many thanks Stuart. I am sure that people-less pictures exist, but I bet the Pope had to clear the square:). The architecture is simply beautiful. Even worse for crowds is the Vatican Museums. The crush was jaw-dropping - worse than in the room with the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

Martin T-M Posted November 7, 2011 Share #8 Posted November 7, 2011 Nice one Michael. It's special how the collonades texture looks like a negative (but it's just me I think).

Thanks Martin, it had not occurred to me, but I see what you mean. Happy to have people see things in my pictures.
tmldds Posted November 7, 2011 Share #10 Posted November 7, 2011 Well done, Michael. Very interesting to see contemporary humans amidst classic architecture. I can just imagine people in roman garbs walking on that path many years ago. Tri:)

I find it is productive to walk slowly through places like this, soaking in the art and civilization surrounding me. Sometimes the geometry of a picture jumps out. Then if I am lucky, something else also happens, usually around people/life. And then sometimes luck smiles upon me.
