Joelogan Posted October 29, 2011 Share #1  Posted October 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello,  I am new to these forums and need some advice.  I currently have a chrome M8 with a 35mm and 50mm lenses. I love the 50 focal length and my reason for considering upgrading to the M9 is based upon the fact that I want my primary lens to be my Summilux 50mm ASPH rather than my Summarit 35mm.  Being from Australia, it's virtually impossible to actually go and look at the M9 or M9-P and am torn between the Steel Grey M9 or the Chrome M9-P. The price difference is actually only around $500 and the sapphire glass sounds nice.  My question is purely cosmetic and finish related. I love my chrome M8 and my 'lux is chrome, would it look much better on the chrome M9-P than the M9 in Grey? It's really hard getting an idea of how it would look as I can't physically go and look at it! Would the grey paint be less durable than a chrome finish? The vulcanite on the M9-P looks very shiny in the images, is this how it is in reality?  I would appreciate any feedback, as it is an expensive purchase decision and I need to get this trivial issue resolved soon so I can start using it!  Thanks guys  Joe
Advertisement Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Hi Joelogan, Take a look here M9 or M9-P and Chrome Lenses. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tompoes Posted October 29, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted October 29, 2011 I recommend to go for the chrome M9 P as the chrome finish is much more durable then the silver paint on the M9. The price difference will be made up when you sell the M9 P. Had the same problem and decided to go with the M9 P chrome paired with the summilux 50 chrome, elmarit 90 chrome and the summarit 35. I looked initially at a second hand M9 but noticed that the bottom and top plates did show too much wear and tear to my liking. This was the main reason to go for the chrome version. Joelogan Posted October 29, 2011 Author Share #4 Â Posted October 29, 2011 Hi, thanks for your replies. I am only really interested in the Chrome M9P or Steel Grey M9 as my lux is chrome, and i want a camera that will match the lenses as well as possible. The P is nice in black though... Â What is the quality of the Chrome finish on the P? Is it similar to the M8?
ophyls Posted October 29, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted October 29, 2011 Hi I have the chrome M9P partnered with black 35 and 50 Luxes and they look fine. The chrome body is beautiful and can actually go with either chrome or black lenses. Whilst I think the steel grey and black colours are individually very nice cosmetically, I think tthat the longterm durability of the chrome M9P is ultimately the more important issue...the fact that you already have chrome lenses makes it even easier to choose the chrome M9P really! Your only problems is actually tracking down a chrome M9P as they are still a bit tricky to get... good luck!
Joelogan Posted October 29, 2011 Author Share #6 Â Posted October 29, 2011 I am definitely leaning towards getting the Chrome M9-P and I don't mind waiting, and thanks for all of your help. Â It's definitely a difficult decision, and although I understand that the appearance and colour is irrelevant in terms of image making, I feel that the purchase of a Leica camera is a hugely expensive commitment, and when colour options exist, the right decision has to be made. Largely similar to buying a new car, the colour does not affect the way it drives, but we all still need to make sure we pick the colour that is right for us as it is something that we will keep and look after for a long time. Â Any other people have any experience with the Chrome M9-P and the Chrome Summilux ASPH 50mm?
farnz Posted October 29, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted October 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Joe, Â Welcome the the forum! Â I have a silver chrome M9-P and a couple of silver chrome lenses but most of my lenses are black chrome. As mentioned earlier black or silver lenses are fine with the M9-P but I personally think that silver chrome lenses with a grey-paint M9 looks odd and initially draws the eye to the silver chrome lens and then the difference with the grey paint becomes obvious. Not a particular concern but enough for me to wait for the chrome M9-P. Â The silver chrome finish on the M9-P should be as hard-wearing as the black chrome finish on the M8 but the grey paint on the M9 will wear faster. Whether it wears in a way that is attractive to you (or to potential future buyers) is a something for you to consider. Â Pete.
TomB_tx Posted October 29, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted October 29, 2011 The colors are certainly personal preference. I'm from the age of chrome cameras, and would have preferred a chrome M9, but at the time it didn't look like Leica would offer chrome again. So I got the grey paint version. I use a mix of chrome and black lenses on it, and have gotten accustomed to the grey: I like it. Chrome should be more durable, and with an M9P you also shouldn't need a screen protector on the LCD. I use a Zhou half case as protection, and the thick leather around the main body does help with bumps and scuffs.
farnz Posted October 29, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted October 29, 2011 The vulcanite on the M9-P is fine - certainly less slippery than the factory 'sharkskin' covering on the M8. Â Pete.
Joelogan Posted October 29, 2011 Author Share #10 Â Posted October 29, 2011 I am definitely going to go for the chrome M9-P, sounds like it should be a perfect match to the Chrome Summilux ASPH 50mm. Thanks all for your help, I will post some impressions when I get the camera, which may be a while... Â Joe
proy Posted October 29, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted October 29, 2011 The chrome on the 50 Summilux is a very matte finish. I sold my 50 Summilux but I thought it paired perfectly with the grey of the M9. I am now running all black lenses on the grey M9 and the aesthetic is excellent.
StephenPatterson Posted October 29, 2011 Share #12 Â Posted October 29, 2011 Hi Joe, Â I had a chrome M8.2, and now have the chrome M9-P. The finish on both is identical. I also have the silver chrome 50 Summilux ASPH, and it does look striking on the silver chrome M9-P, but black Leica lenses also look very nice on the silver chrome M9-P, mainly because of the vulcanite (or whatever it is these days). I like the build quality of Leica's silver chrome lenses, even though they are heavier. However, don't let lens color be a deciding factor when you are choosing lenses. Currently I'm on the hunt for a nice 90/2.8 Elmarit-M, and I'm looking at condition, age, price and finish (in that order). Â IMHO the aesthetics of one's camera are no less important than the color of one's car. Maybe it isn't that important, and it won't help you get any better gas mileage, but if you like it, and it makes you happy, then BUY IT. bpalme Posted October 30, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted October 30, 2011 I'll be upgrading to the M9 soon and would rather have an M9P but I think it will be too much money for me. If it's not too big a deal for you I would go for the P. I think Leica really cheaped out with the grey paint.. I love the chrome on my M8.
Joelogan Posted October 30, 2011 Author Share #14 Â Posted October 30, 2011 Regarding the matte finish on the 50 lux ASPH, how would this look on the Chrome M9-P? Would it match up OK?
Joelogan Posted October 30, 2011 Author Share #15 Â Posted October 30, 2011 Also, I am pleased the vulcanite allows black lenses to look good on the body, as I also have a black 35 summarit which is a great lens by the way, and I love the ergonomics of it, but I really want to get more use out of the 50 summilux. proy Posted October 30, 2011 Share #16 Â Posted October 30, 2011 Regarding the matte finish on the 50 lux ASPH, how would this look on the Chrome M9-P? Would it match up OK? Â I can't be certain but I suspect it would pair less on the M9-P than on the grey M9.
davidbaddley Posted October 30, 2011 Share #17 Â Posted October 30, 2011 I think the chrome lens would look great on the steel-gray M9. All of the small bits, including the shutter button, shutter-speed dial, flash shoe, etc. are chrome, which create a nice, subtle color contrast with the gray paint and would match your lens beautifully. StephenPatterson Posted October 30, 2011 Share #18 Â Posted October 30, 2011 The silver chrome finish on my M9-P and 50 Summilux ASPH is exactly the same. They are a perfect match. I also have the 35 Summicron ASPH in silver chrome, and it matches perfectly as well. Â I want to say once again that black lenses look great on the silver chrome M9-P. Currently I only have the CV15 Heliar, but I have the new 21/3.4 on order and I'm looking for a 90 Elmarit-M, both in black. At the Leica Akademie I used a black Noctilux and a black 90 Summarit and they both looked great (especially the Nocti!!!). Don't have any reservations about what color lens to buy. If there is a chrome available, BUY IT. If not BUY THE BLACK ONE. You will be happy either way. The same cannot be said for mounting silver chrome lenses on black M9-P bodies... Joelogan Posted October 30, 2011 Author Share #19 Â Posted October 30, 2011 How is the CV 15 on the full frame sensor? Considered getting this lens a while back.
Paul Verrips Posted October 30, 2011 Share #20 Â Posted October 30, 2011 A chrome lux will pair better with a chrome M9P than the grey M9. Â You can search some pictures of that with Google on the www. Â Maybe you should pair the chrome lux with a black M9P ?
