andalus Posted October 27, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Got a msg from Leica NJ and they will take my M9 for the upgrade to virtual P shape next week. I am not likely to be able to afford the M10 whenever it appears, and anyway, the M9 seems awfully good enough given that aside from some occasional journalism, I don't use it THAT much. So why am I doing the upgrade. I'll get another 18 months of warranty, get the sensor cleaned, etc. Plus the chrome top and bottom plate and sapphire glass screen. I am just hoping there's some value added to camera in case I DO go for an M10 and sell the M9 -- like if I find a gold mine in my yard, haha. The M9 takes awfully fine photos. My assumption is it will be the last camera I buy, being 64 now. Of course this message is rationalizing the 2k cost of the upgrade. I am quite sure many other M9 owners are pondering the same things I am, the quid pro quos? It's never an easy decision for anyone with limited resources... likalar Posted October 27, 2011 Share #2 Posted October 27, 2011 Andalus, I wouldn't worry about "added value". It's a digital camera, so I doubt if there's much long-term added value. If the warranty is extended, ask if the next owner gets the use of the extension, in case you sell it to upgrade again. Sounds like you want the upgrade, and that's why you should get it. StephenPatterson Posted October 27, 2011 Share #3 Posted October 27, 2011 Sounds like you want the upgrade, and that's why you should get it. Larry +1 I'm very happy with my silver chrome M9-P. The M9 is a wonderful camera (as you already know) and the Leica purist in me enjoys the chrome, traditional look of an M2. If the M10 does come out with lots of "bells and whistles", EVF, autofocus, or whatever, I can see keeping this M9-P for a long time.
IkarusJohn Posted October 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted October 28, 2011 I was very happy with the steel grey M9 when I got it (apart from the price ) Then I got an MP, and the trouble started - its clean lines and silver chrome finish made the M9 look a bit tawdry, with the writing on the front and the paint finish. So I jumped at the upgrade. My silver chrome M9-P (if that's the right designation) was finished last Friday (21 October), and is somewhere between Customer Services and shipping. So my justification is that I will have a matching pair (MP & M9-P), both of which are end of the line classics. Whatever the M10 is going to be, it will be quite different from the M9. I'm also enough of a realist to acknowledge that there is enough challenge in these two cameras for me - I don't want live view, video, autofocus or better high ISO performance. The M9-P is just perfect the way it is. Cheers John

kaiwing Posted November 2, 2011 Share #6 Posted November 2, 2011 I believe upgrading to M9-P is an added value and a good investment. Your M9-P (in coming future) won't be your last camera. Who knows? One day you will win a fortune and go for a M10 or M11.

asmith Posted November 3, 2011 Share #8 Posted November 3, 2011 I've bought M6ttl, two M7s, two M8s, an M9 and an M9P since I was 64 more than twenty years ago. Alwyn

asmith Posted November 3, 2011 Share #10 Posted November 3, 2011 Most were traded in for the next buy. I am left with the two nines and some much earlier cameras which mainly gather dust since I went digital. I sold all my R kit. Alwyn

vanhulsenbeek Posted November 3, 2011 Share #12 Posted November 3, 2011 Andalus! Why not after your upcoming trip? (see my personal message)
Shade Posted November 4, 2011 Share #13 Posted November 4, 2011 The added warranty itself sounds great but I personally dont think the upgrade is worth your while. For 2k I would rather sell the m9 and purchase an m9p instead, the difference is a little iver 2k and you get a spanking new camera..
andalus Posted November 5, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted November 5, 2011 My M9 only has about 4000 exposures. As an M9 upgraded I will consider it almost as a new camera! If I am still alive when the M10, 11 comes out and I have the funds and it's spectacular, I will use the M9 as a backup. I've got all the lenses I need: 28 summicron, 50 lux asph, both in silver, and the 135 telyt. May sell the latter....

Mine arrived in Solms on 14 October, and the work was completed on 21 October. Shipping time extra (it arrived back in the country over the weekend, and I hope to get it later today, early tomorrow). (2) Yes. I bought the warranty extension as well, and my warranty (on a camera new in October 2010) runs to early October 2014. (3) Yes. Mine had a focus check as well. As I understand it, all cameras going back to Leia, for whatever reason, get a once over. Cheers John
vinster Posted November 7, 2011 Share #17 Posted November 7, 2011 Well the dscision has been made, i decide to put my M9 on ebay and recoup my cash and buy the M9-P .Got 4 hours to go and not sold for the amount i want back will be taking it in to my local shop for the upgrade 1250 euros. Think its worth every penny for the upgrade, extra year warrent so would be covered till july 2013, and a full service.Mine M9 has only done 1800 actuations. So ebay ends at 10pm if not sold back to leica for the upgrade.

vinster Posted November 8, 2011 Share #19 Posted November 8, 2011 Sold but messed about by buyer, so back on ebay for 3 days.Only costs 88p so no big deal if not sold.Taking in to my Leica dealer Saturday morning if no joy with the sale.Going for the chrome upgrade, will match my 35mm F1 summicron silver lens. Looking at this a long term toy so wont be swopping any time soon. Only wish i had bought new from the off, even though ex-demo is like new with only 1800 actuations. digitalpowershot Posted November 8, 2011 Share #20 Posted November 8, 2011 Only wish i had bought new from the off, even though ex-demo is like new with only 1800 actuations. Why don't you sell it here? 1.800 actuations is nothing, so this was practically a new M9. I wish I had bought the M9-P from the start too, but I had a hard time to convince my wife even for the M9 (also like new)... Now I'm trying to sell it, I have some potential buyers already (within 1 day) I also see the M9/P as a long term camera. I won't upgrade to an M10/etc any time soon. I hope the camera will last for at least 10years. But, my local Leica-Shop in Vienna/Austria told me that I'll have to wait for a M9-P ard. 2 months!!!! so no Christmas/New Year with a Leica?!?
