Scott Root Posted February 15, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 15, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I feel the need to get back to basics in respect to my M6TTL outfit since I hardly ever use my 90 APO summicron, use my 50 summicron eighty percent of the time and my 35 Asph Summicron the balance of the time. As I have soul searched on what to discard and add to my outfit once my M8 comes and I dump my M6TTL, I had thought until recently to dump my 90 APO and puchase a 28-35-90 tri-elmar. Then, the negative reviews of the tri-elmar in respect to compormised sharpness and speed swayed me to think of keeping my 35 and 50 and get a 28 or 24. Just as I got use to this idea ,I reminded myself of my disiillusion of packing my current bag of stuff around durring my travels that does not include photography as the main objective of my travels--I am not a professional photographer, but I do travel extensively internationally and love taking good pictures. Over these past years I've packed a camera bag in and out of international airports and into meetings along with a laptop--I look like an idiot walking into meetings directly from the airport toting a camera bag in one hand and a laptop in the other. What I would give to reduce myself to a single lens, say the 35 Asph Summicron, packed in a LeicaTime leather case, thereby ditching the camera bag altogether. I'd have the speed and the sharpness I am not willing to compromise, in a very small package with the M8. Futhermore, the tri-elmar sticks out like a boob. Why can't I get a 47mm lens in a 35mm equivalent camera to cover most of what I could get with the tri-elmar if I'm willing to walk around a bit. And, think of all the additional shots I'd get with the thing hanging around my neck instead of stuck in some cameral bag. Maybe I'd keep the 50 Summicron at home for some sharp portrate work now and then. Why would I purchase and pack around a 28 when it is so close to to the 35 and how often would I use the 24--probably seven percent of the time and maybe never if I'm packing a bag around like an idiot? lars_bergquist Posted February 15, 2007 Share #3  Posted February 15, 2007 Scott,  If I had to travel around the Earth with a Leica and one lens, it would be the 50 mm Summilux ASPH if the camera was my dear old M4P, and the 35 mm Summilux ASPH if the M8. The 'standard' lens of about 50 mm (52 in the Leica) was always the most versatile of all focal lengths. During the late 1950's, when I bought my first accessory lens -- a 135 mm, but the camera was not a Leica -- the classic kit of 35 + 90 mm gained a following. I did follow! That would translate into 28 + 75 mm. The Cosina/Voigtländer 75 is a fine little lens and small enough to be carried in a jacket pocket, or in a corner of your attaché case. Stop it down to 4 or 5.6 and you have excellent image quality.  On the other hand, 28 + 50 mm is a perfectly valid kit for the M8, especially if you use the 50 as a 'people lens'.  BTW I sold my 50 Summicron and went for the Summilux ASPH, not primarily because of that extra f-stop, but because it was far superior to my 1983 vintage Summicron in terms of resistance to flare. Maybe current Summicrons are better.  The old man from the Age of One-lens Photography
wattsy Posted February 15, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 15, 2007 Scott, if you currently use a 50 for most of your shooting, you'll be fine with just M8 and 35/F2. If my shooting was purely for personal use I doubt that I'd bother owning more than two lenses and I'd be sorely tempted to stick with just one. I firmly believe in the minimum of gear approach and the M system lends itself to that very well. Â One problem with the M8 vis-Ã -vis the M6 is that if you are going to be away for any kind of extended period, you will probably need to cart the battery charger 'brick' around. I guess you could stock up on spare batteries but I'd still feel a little exposed if I was away for a few weeks without access to the charger. (On the plus side, you will be freed from lugging around lots of exposed and unexposed film.)
carstenw Posted February 15, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 15, 2007 Scott, why don't you simply try it out? Get the M8, and put the 35 Cron Asph on it, and leave the others at home. This is the same lens which I use most of the time, btw.
Scott Root Posted February 16, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted February 16, 2007 Thanks for all of your thoughts regarding my musings. I'll see how I fair with the 35 Asph Summicron alone once I get my M8 and if frustration sets in I'll have to rethink my getting back to basics.
