Wolfgang Esslinger Posted September 16, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been looking for a small camera to complement the M8 for low light level shooting, with wide-angle lens but ideally flexible, ie. with interchangeable lenses. As cheap as possible, while I am waiting for the new Leica system - whatever it will be and whenever it will be on the market (if it is as good as we all hope for it will not be available before 2013 I am afraid). Finally I went for the Nex-3 with 2.8/16mm. Now, despite some tests I read about it: This is a bit of a disappointment! Despite its sensor size picture quality is below M8 at all ISOs (good news: M8 is better than I thought ). Any ideas for a solution? Ok, Nex-7 sounds great - but I don't want to invest that much if a superior Leica system is more or less around the corner (of course it will be superior, at least to us, won't it?). And yes, I'd like to go for an M9 with 1.4/21mm - such a shame that Leica can't deliver... Thanks for your helpful suggestions.

Shade Posted September 24, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 24, 2011 You can always get a preowned NEX C3 (quite an improvement compared to the NEX 3) with an M-Mount adaptor. Gives you great results, and lets you invest in the same Leica lenses, and well, you can sell it without too much of a loss then.
lct Posted September 24, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 24, 2011 The Sonys have problems with wider Ms than 35 or 28 apparently. See The NEX 7 Leica lens thread - Leica User Forum. If you want a small system fitting well your Leica M lenses, there are only two available AFAIK, the Leica CL from the seventies and the current Ricoh GXR with Mount A12 module. Shade Posted September 26, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 26, 2011 Lct, wouldn't the GXR M-Module be the same with C3 with an adaptor? Or is it different due to the dfference in using adaptor hence the flange length difference?
lct Posted September 26, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 26, 2011 Try to use a 15mm M lens with any Sony and see how sharp the corners are. I have some experience in this matter with my R-D1 and M8.2. The offset microlenses of the latter's sensor make the difference with lenses from 12mm to 25mm and sometimes 28mm as well. I don't own any mirrorless camera though so take what i say with a pinch of salt.
JeTexas Posted September 26, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 26, 2011 Just out of curiousity, are you able to get close focus with the Sony and Ricoh using M lenses?
bill Posted September 26, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 26, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can only speak for the Ricoh. Yes. Regards, Bill
Shade Posted September 26, 2011 Share #8 Posted September 26, 2011 I can speak for the sony, yes you can easily focus as close as the lens allow you to.
JeTexas Posted September 26, 2011 Share #9 Posted September 26, 2011 I can speak for the sony, yes you can easily focus as close as the lens allow you to. How close would that be? Can you get macro with an M lens?
bill Posted September 26, 2011 Share #10 Posted September 26, 2011 Define "Macro"... 1:1 - No. There is the 90mm Macro-Elmarit M but that requires an adaptor and won't (TTBOMK) fit on the digibodies we are discussing. Lenses focus to their closest focus. It's as simple as that. Regards, Bill
JeTexas Posted September 26, 2011 Share #11 Posted September 26, 2011 I was just wondering if it was close as in 30cm X1 close or maybe even closer. Obviously, you can't get any closer than about 3' with an actual M, so I was wondering if it improved on that or not. I guess if it's a function of the lens, it's about the same.
