Leica M8 rangefinder baseline

That number is the physical baseline length, the distance between the optical axes of the two parts of the rangefinder, ball-park, the distance between the centres of the two windows.

However, viewfinder magnification changes the effective baseline length. With the M8, the magnification is 0.68 which gives an effective baseline of 47.1mm. That's why a viewfinder magnifier helps focussing - it increases the effective baseline length back up to 58.9mm.
