hi to all...accidently finding this site completely redirected my yr long search for a suitable second camera to my canon 1dsII...that's a gem that i truly love but i do lots of cityscape stuff and it's a killer carrying that monster around so i've been looking..was about to go for the 5d until i held one with my 24-70L and immediately realized that though lighter and smaller it too was a monster...then i came accross this forum not thinking for a minute i would go a whole different way but after several days of reading here and realizing the flaws were minor compared to the adulation for the camera decided to go and take a look at it...couldn't believe how small it was and how 'tiny' all those 2k+ lenses were....broke out into a sweat, plunked down 7k tor the camera and the 35mm 2.0 and went out and started shooting though i was lost as to what i was doing wandering from slr land....well the files are stunning as good as the ids and the glass here makes them crisper and sharper despite the 6mp difference... the camera is fabulous and has a unique warm creamy look to the files...so the ids can now stay in the studio where it's size and weight won't matter and when i'm out in the street i have this wonderful toy as my companion...i'm already planning on selling several of my cannon lenses to start rebuilding...so thanks to all of you and look forward to being here with you...off to europe this fri with the m8....my only problem so far is that the sensor had an awful lot of dust spots for a brand new camera...how can that happen and any suggestions about the safest way to clean??.....

Clean the sensor just like you do the Canons. First, try a powerful bulb blower (not canned air). For my next step, I use an arctic butterfly sensor brush. The final step for stubborn spots is the visible dust sensor clean solution on their sterile swabs. Many folks use sensor swabs and eclipse fluid for a final step instead.

As to why a new camera would have sensor dust, I have no clue. It was common with the 5D when I got one (a standard newsgroup complaint, mine had a bit of dust but nothing to write home about), and it seems similar for the M8 (mine was clean when I got it). I don't think the M8 has any more of a dust problem than my Canons.

It's great to hear from people who really understand why so many of us are so happy with this camera. It should be nearly ideal for your trip to Europe. I hope you really enjoy your M8!

Until later,

Clyde Rogers

Mike,

Congratulations and you won't regret it.

As far as cleaning, I think a lot of us are in agreement about the Arctic Butterfly system by Visible Dust. Make sure to tell them what camera model you have if you decide to order. Because if that is grease on the sensor you may have to do a wet clean as well.

If you order tomorow, you may have it by Thursday. Cheers!

Welcome Mike,

congratulations on the M8, I'm a fellow New Yorker and convert from the Canon DSLR family. I'm sure you're going to find the world of DRF as fascinating as I have.

I've had no dust problems so far, so I won't comment.
