Firmware 1.10 will be out soon and it will take care of many bug issues that exist today, the camera is certainly ready to be purchased today.:D

Yeah, we hear you...

There's a learning curve for sure. And for a guy who doesn't like PCs, I'm spending way too time hunched over the keyboard trying to learn a new workflow.

But what's the alternative? One thing Leica has done well with the M8 is to retain its "M-ness" with that special M handling and feel. And, of course, I can continue to see a return on my investment with Leica and non-Leica glass bought over the years.

We all need to suck it up and tread that learning curve 'cause there's no going back to film now, given the continuing skrinkage in the supply of "good" and available photo labs.

As stuck on the M form factor as I continue to be, there's absolutely no alternative to the M8.

Guy, I see banding in your posted image : -(

The constant indecision ... "Do I buy? Do I not buy?" is understandable Jim.

People get all giddy about a new toy, me included ... and the outpouring of mutual love is touching. Yet a reality check isn't a bad thing sometimes.

Folks like Guy LOVE the glass, which is understandable being a recent M convert. Those that have used the M for decades have "been there done that", and expect nothing less.

However, the glass and the camera are two different things.

The camera has been a PITA for early adopters (not unusual for first cameras). I personally wouldn't rely on it for critical commercial work unless I had a steamer trunk full of bodies. When I DO use it, there is a bullet proof Canon 1DsMKII waiting in the wings because I only have one M8. For the amount of that type work I do, one @ $5,000. is justified, two @ $10,000. would be extravagant, ( I've ordered a second, but am rethinking that ).

"No going back to film?" I personally never left it. No problem getting film or getting it processed. There's no going back for commercial shooters for sure. But most commercial work isn't done with a Leica of any kind. Guy is a rarity and it skews this forum.

IMO as well as others, B&W film still rules, so even if every lab in my area closed their color film lines, I'd still shoot B&W film with my MP3 and process it myself. It kills me that people will sit in front of a computer for days processing digital files, then turn around and whine about processing film themselves.

So Jim, if you're looking for immediate need justification there's plenty of that here. If a reality check can be of any value, I tried.

Stuff like this under nasty conditions makes you think twice about NOT getting one . Try this handheld at 1/90 at f2 ISO 640 handheld with a 90 apo. It's all about the glass. Just love this freaking camera. I used to have to shoot these events with a flash , no more

Guy, you'll have to do something for the aliasing on that shirt. :D I'm with you....

I just made the full investment - lenses and body. Up till now I had nothing but Canon bodies and L lenses. Both are great. This forum is for Leica users, so this is the obvious place to come and deal with problems. Subsequently there's a disproportionate number of posts about problems, and to compound matters these problems are being encountered by people who have very high expectations AND an emotional connection to the brand and their related experience.

If you don't need the camera right now then wait till Summer to be on the safe side, by then any solvable problems will have been dealt with. That means software glitches as well as Quality Assurance matters at the plant.

But I think you can get one now if you really want to.

I presently own three Leica film cameras and two Leica digital cameras. However, I getting cold feet about purchasing the new M8 camera, even though I am on a US deaker's waiting list. Hearing present owners talk about problems is discouraging to me, as there is so much about these problems I don't understand.

What I do understand is that I may be investing almost $5,000 in a camera body that has problems, and yet, I want the camera. That's my concern. I keeping looking at the photo posts by those of you who already have the camera and that keeps my name on the dealers waiting list. Am I the only person who is having these doubts? Comments would be appreciated. Jim

Jim,

This thread needs another reply like I need another leg. But...

Like some others here, I was critical of, and disappointed with, the apparently almost-ready status of the M8. I still am.

Nevertheless I recently bought one. You might find guidance in my rationale.

I've owned an M7 and several Leica lenses for some time. Despite enjoying this equipment as a refreshing change-of-pace in photographic style I've found that it's spending more time in the closet, a victim of its film basis. That is to say that I have thousands of dollars invested in excellent camera lenses that are mostly dormant. Does this sound familiar?

Living in the real world is what led me to own an M8. I am not a camera collector; I use what I own and sell what I don't. It makes no sense for me to retain my Leica lenses if their prospects for future usage will continue to dwindle. So while the M8's state is indisputably almost-ready (and its price is far beyond market value in today's digital world) its performance is actually pretty darn good. Most important, it gives my Leica lenses a far more active life than my M7 ever did. Spending $5,000 to invigorate an investment of approximately $9,000 in lenses made sense to me, particularly since all of it could be sold at excellent value at nearly any time. (I actually even bought another lens.) It's highly unlikely that Leica will introduce a successor to the M8 anytime soon. Perhaps they never will.

I've been quite happy with this meta-nostalgic M8 so far and have experienced zero serious problems after approximately 300 frames.

I encourage you to evaluate your own situation with respect to your M-system instruments and their true usage. If you're happy in film forget the M8 at least for a while. But if your M gear is collecting more dust than photographs be honest with yourself; either sell it and move on or buy an M8. It's really that simple.

Have fun!

Jim--

I suppose I have been, as some others on the site, one of the "beta testers"--but there is no going back now. 90+% of my shooting is black and white, and I have been using M's since the 70's [side by side with SLR's]. A good deal of the shooting I've been doing lately is low light [performance photography, particularly jazz musicians]. While I still shoot film, the quality and flexibility with the M8 has been such that the M6's are likely to gather dust, except for special applications. The M8, with the firmware updated to 1.09 has no banding, no reflections in odd locations, terrific latitude--I'm delighted. The only adjustment has been the change in the effective field of view of my favorite lenses [Perhaps there is an 18mm, if V-C makes one--in my future].

As an aside, recently I managed to collect the first "scar" on the black finsih. To my surprise, my reaction was one of relief. Now I don't feel I need to baby it, just use it. 2K photos since it was updated at Solms, and no problems.
