So who are the architects and what was the original purpose?

Sorry - lost track of this thread...

The building is a modular constructed petrol station kiosk in aluminium designed by Jean + Henri Prouve for Mobiloil in 1951. This one (from 1953) is now on the Vitra campus in Weil am Rhein and was originally in the Haute-Loire.

The “rock” is part of the building or rather the facade of the building is part of a work that includes the “rock”...there are others both inside and outside the walls.

The contents of the building are all by the same individual who positioned the rock. (He is not the Architect)

"Art" is the contents of the building(s) that I think you're looking for.

Don't know why Tadao Ando was abandoned by AZach, but it's clearly his Naoshima Island art museum particularly after your second photo.

So if Tadao Ando didn't place the "rock" himself perhaps it was placed by Walter De Maria an American minimalist  who has exhibits in the Chicho?

A museum (designed by Tadao Ando) containing paintings and sculptures by Lee Ufan.

Sorry I posted before I read your post. You were obviously on the right track. So many minimalists, so little time.

AZach is correct - the building is the Lee Ufan museum by Tadao Ando on Naoshima. For me a perfectly realised setting for the Mono-ha artworks......spellbinding.
