Technically it might be argued that this is a structure rather than a building but rather large, interesting historically and I believe now unique. Taken a few weeks ago with CL and 18-56.

Bump - think of ships

Wilson

Hello Wilson,

I have been thinking of ships, but, so far, nobody has written anything new.

By the way, as per the questions asked above: Does this have anything to do with "sluices" or is it something "that controls water levels"?

Best Regards,

Michael

I think it may be time to give up and get someone else to post a new picture.

The mystery building is part of the historic Blackwood's Screw Dock in Barbados. This is a ship lifting device, used as an alternative to a dry dock or slip. Amazingly it was still in very occasional operation up until the mid 1980's, although in a state of considerable dilapidation by that time. I went down to try and see it working during a trip to Barbados in the 1970's but after waiting around for over three hours, still nothing had happened, other than large amounts of rum being drunk, so I gave up and left. Sadly there is just not the government money in Barbados available for restoration of this great piece of Victorian engineering. Originally powered by a 100HP steam engine, it was converted to electric in the late 1930s'. I was told by the father of my brother in law, that the lights all over the island would go dim, when they started the very large electric motor. It was very active during the war years, repairing smaller naval vessels, minesweepers etc.

No mystery here, the resident behind this entrance is well-known - who is he?

A bit puzzled by this one. The guard looks like he is wearing a Kepi, which points to France but that isn't the Elysée Palace. I wonder if it might be the Presidential Palace in Rome.
