Remote Shutter Release for M8

Having been used over the last 20+ years to having an electrical release for my various Contax cameras, it is feeling a bit of backward step to return to my somewhat crunchy Minox mechanical remote release. It also has the disadvantage of an "always on" T lock. I know I can use the Leica Digital Capture program but do I want to carry around my iBook all the time - NO. I had assumed that there would be a readily available, solenoid shutter release but I have found nothing to date. Any thoughts anyone? Maybe a pneumatic release is the answer.

Hi

Looks that electrical remote release isn't that perfect designed and planned at general M8 concept/system for peripheral accessories up to now.

Let's wait and see - Leica stands in general for good sorted accessories as well. M8 Systen is actual to new to be ready with everything right from the beginning.

I was looking for remote capabilities as well (controlled long time shutter release for astronomical) but I'm not that happy what I got offered by the Leica capture SW (is not working at all at the long time area).

I was surprised too by learning that battery lifetime per session (active USB connection - but with less data activity) seames to be limited to 2,5hours ... 3,5hours :(

Still not knowing if this is "regular" behaviour or camera defect. Leica CS is actual investigating ...

Actual I'm thinking that it's regular because camera isn't allowed to switch to power saving stand-by modus, so battery get down continuously.

External power supply to be appied for a full astro night session!

As I need the "auto-data-download-feature" (included to Leica capture SW :) ) I have to accept Laptop and wired camera. But might be that there come up in future WLAN as new feature?!

And a nice handy release unit - by wire or wireless - would be big step forward too ...

Just my opinion but I think both of you are looking for a DSLR from companies like Canon or Nikon.

The M8 hold true with all other M cameras. Did any of the other M's have a electronic, wired or wireless, shutter release system? None that I have ever heard of.

I would not expect for this feature or a wireless data transfer system to be included anytime in the foreseeable future on any M camera.

your only option for a remote shutter release is to hope someone/company comes out with a unit that connects to the standard thread system on all older camera shutter buttons.

There you go you could invent it. A simple solenoid actuating a standard cable release connected to a wireless receiver and battery pack and with a transmitter to control it.

Or you could just buy a long cable release.

I have found that Jessops in the UK offer a 28 inch long pneumatic release. That should do the trick. Here: Jessops.com - Jessops Cable Release 28in Vinyl - Jessops.com

I'm with Wilson and Karl.

The M8 is certainly a descendant of all the M cameras, but we're in the digital world now.

The M8 has a USB connection and that connection can bring power to the camera. I think Leica should work on providing continuous power to an Mx via USB connection, while at the same time controlling the camera from the computer.

They obviously thought about this because they started down the road of computer control. We should probably think of ourselves as Beta Testers.

To a major degree, we're in this for the lenses. However, Leica was an early adopter of interchangability; think of the Visoflex system. It makes a lot of sense to use the USB connection to a greater degree.

Hi

... and what's about the M8 ???;) Still something very different to the former M's !

So, there was already some changing at Leica's philosophy. And I think that there is plenty of space to bring up the new M generation to a system level celebrating the new "electronic" level just entered.

A cable release with some additional features wouldn't be worse!
