Marc, I like your design alot and many of the suggestions here, a fun, productive and positive thread. My thoughts - market the camera as the new photojournalist's/nature photographer's field tool, able to handle the toughest situations. A few ideas, not in any particular order:

1. 8.5 micron pixel

2. 24x36 mm frame

3. 12 million pixels

4. 16 bit a/d, no AA filter, 16GB buffer/storage, Wi/Fi b-g-n, Bluetooth

5. Electronics and firmware by Panasonic to Leica's spec's, proprietary RAW format as well as DNG in camera

6. Body by Leica in Germany, lightweight black-anodized aluminum-alloy with customizable grips

7. Weather-sealed, gasketed mount

8. Three Top-camera controls: ISO/shutter-speed, WB/Mode, shutter-release/EV comp. Also red-LED display for info. I like your auto-ISO button and exposure comp. lever, BTW. Info displayed in VF.

9. SD/CF slot

10. Integration with possible future AF/OIS lenses jointly developed with Panasonic

11. 3" rear LCD with removable protective cover

12. Manual-mirror-lock up and shutter-open lock, multiple-exposures, and HDR merge exposure functions in bracketing

13. Include 2 batteries and 12-V car adapter charger

Hey !!!! There IS a black Mercedes with deeply tinted windows parked across the street : -0

No, wait ... couldn't be in reaction to this thread. It's to soon for the turtle reflexes of Leica. Must be here about the thread blowing the whistle on the M8 IR issue last December : -)

No problem, I have filters that let me see through those tinted windows. They'll think the red dots on their foreheads are from a laser site .... LOL : -)

I would like it known that I have never seen this man before in my life

Leica has collaborated with Imacon and Jenoptik, European companies. They are reluctant to work with Panasonic in professional Leica products, and I cannot understand why. Panasonic can provide custom-made processors (Venus Engine), motherboards, electronic components and internal software. They are very good doing that.

Maybe because Imacon and Jenoptik have experience with MF back and getting the best out of a CCD, something Panasonic has not.

This might be more of an image thing than a matter of technical expertise. With a DNG-based workflow, the “getting the best out of a CCD” part is mostly the task of the raw converter, and when it comes to in-camera processing and JPEG compression, Panasonic’s experience in that area is vastly superior to both Imacon’s or Jenoptik’s.

I've worked on several big projects involving subcontractors from both Germany and Japan more than a decade ago ... I actually have lived in these two countries for quite some time. The Japanese companies are used to be ultra conservative in terms of knowledge transfer - to anybody.

In this particular case, I'd assume that Panasonic is only interested in using Leica's trademark to boost the sales of their digital cameras, Leica can hardly gain anything useful in terms of technology ...

but I hope the Venus III engine is to be avoided

At least its noise suppression should be turned off. But their demosaicing algorithm and indeed the colour rendition is quite good. AWB would improve as well.

I too, want a big, bright, high-mag finder with plain matte screen w/ optional gridlines, maybe histogram, and not a lot else: Think reduced visual clutter.

Even if the new camera is 1.3x, a full-frame viewing area would be nice: Just like the extra space around the M camera framelines, it's a compositional aid.

Switchable between Mass Storage and PTP USB modes. So if you're traveling and misplace your card reader, you will have an alternative means of moving data around.

Second USB port for direct backups to hard drive or iPod, 1GB/minute transfers.

~5K USD or less and ~700 grams

Cheap commodity-type batteries (but I know, proprietary batteries are moneymakers)

Choice of 3 finishes:

Black

Chrome

Optical Camouflage

SL-quality viewfinder (magnification, contrast, brightness)

16 MP full-frame sensor

size & weight of R8/9 w/o motor drive or DMR

OFF switch for the focus confirmation thing

Totally agree with Doug.

The only thing I'd like to add is Image Stabilization. On the sensor, not on the lenses.

That is very, very interesting. Thanks.
