thighslapper Posted July 30, 2011 Share #21 Â Posted July 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the Apo 90 as well. Â It stays at home unused...... the 90/4 is so much more compact that the real world use/luggability wins out every time. Â I've yet to come across a situation where I found I missed the f2.... and to be honest I had plenty of focussing issues with this lens wide open and have no regrets at dispatching it to my increasingly large 'just in case' pile of Leica gear ...... which is closely approaching the Nikon heap that I just disposed of...... Â ........ and get a collapsible 39mm rubber hood as the reversible metal one is a pain....I haven't noticed any increase in flare issues despite warnings from other posters when I mentioned this before.... Advertisement Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Hi thighslapper, Take a look here Leica Macro Elmar-M 90mm f/4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Doc Henry Posted July 30, 2011 Share #22  Posted July 30, 2011 Thanks to all for comments. I'm currently checking out a complete set (goggles, angled finder, lens) which is available used. If it's still available I think I'll go for it - as I said, if I find I'm not using it that much, I don't think I stand to lose money on a re-sale. Chris, You will not be disappointed Good pictures. ... one last shot this morning  Welcome, dear visitor! chris_tribble Posted July 30, 2011 Author Share #24 Â Posted July 30, 2011 Hmm - I'm certainly persuaded that this is a tempting proposition - the only issue is that the lens I was looking at was listed VAT free - with VAT added the deal comes to over GBP 2000 and I'm beginning to think it's not sensible to go this way for the occasional use I'd be giving it. Seriously tempted by a Visoflex III + Bellows - or does madness lie this way? Â As I really like the Apo 90 Summicron (and have no focusing issues), maybe a Viso would be fun. Wilson, Washington and others have shown its potential so I'll see if I can pick one up. Certainly an affordable option!
wda Posted July 30, 2011 Share #25 Â Posted July 30, 2011 Chris, I'm impressed; head won over heart! I feel you are right. I came very near to buying a chrome set for slightly less only to be frustrated by the errant mechanics of the lens, despite it visiting Leica for a cure. My performance tests confirmed all that members have claimed above and I could see it as an alternative travel lens. In the event I found a mint coded 90mm Elmarit-M, so have no regrets. Chris, if it is your decision to move to the bellows, I do not think you can use the last Apo cron 90mm ? Am I right? you have to buy rings and other lens Combinations with Visioflex III for example, are on the table that I posted here: posted in this thread : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/192846-macro-m9.html Best Henry
chris_tribble Posted July 30, 2011 Author Share #27 Â Posted July 30, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ah - further complications. Maybe I'll have to revert to my 5D2 for these occasional purposes. Boring but functional. Maybe I shouldn't be expecting my RF system to cover all angles! Â But again - thanks for the info + I am aware of some hugely useful threads I can follow if I go in the Viso direction!
russell Posted July 31, 2011 Share #28 Â Posted July 31, 2011 Wait for one that's just the lens only instead of the full kit? And get a Viso III to go with it for the macro shots? Best of both worlds? Â Mine doesn't have the mechanical problems others have mentioned. Flared once or twice when I didn't expect it but I check the LCD and reframe or use my hand as a shade... But I don't want to exaggerate on the flare. Really it's a great little lens. Without it's size I wouldn't be taking a 90mm along with me. Now it's hard to leave behind. Certainly an affordable option!  I have a heap of visoflex stuff as well ...... tremendous fun ..... but hardly portable or capable of taking a spontaneous snap in the garden when you spot something interesting ..... and god help you if you intend to take it on holiday...... the macro attachment for the 90/4 takes seconds to attach and weighs hardly anything  The bottom line is that the 90/4 produces superb quality images, comes in a supremely portable package and offers good macro capability as a bonus ...... if thats what you want....  I bought it basically 'to try' with no great expectations and the likelihood I would sell it on if it proved a dud ( I paid full price from Meister in Berlin). I was very surprised and if I was now forced to pick a 3 or 4 lens set it would definitely be one...... for me it's a keeper
Doc Henry Posted July 31, 2011 Share #30  Posted July 31, 2011 I went out this morning to make even macro photo with the MacroElmar 90 and M9. But I also brought my Leicafex SL with its extension ring and R Elmarit f: 2.8 135mm I must admit that the focus is much easier than on the M9.I'll post a photo taken with the SL Macrophotography make with an SLR is relatively easier ! That said, nevertheless Elmar 90mm really makes good pictures.  Welcome, dear visitor! Doc Henry Posted August 1, 2011 Share #31 Â Posted August 1, 2011 Chris, I recently posted some photos taken with Macro Elmar 90 as tele compared with the Apo Summicron 90mm ASPH http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/193762-rhythm-hell.html What do you think? Â MacroElmar versatile lens? Best Henry
chris_tribble Posted August 1, 2011 Author Share #32  Posted August 1, 2011 Henry - It's a lovely lens - but when it comes to a 90, for me the Apo Cron is immaculate. I really need the speed for a lot of the work I do (music / documentary / corporate + personal) + I love the way it draws in and out of focus. See below:  So - much as I desire the macro capability, in the real world, I can't afford to have the two - and wouldn't get rid of the Apo 90. However - thanks for all your efforts - I feel I've had a really good education in the delights of the Macro 90! Welcome, dear visitor!
