heninger Posted February 9, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) After an initial snafu with a DOA battery charger, I'm been happily plugging away wiht my M8. In the last three weeks, 2000 images have gone thru my various summicrons to much delight. Â However, I've noticed a nice software bug that seems to be getting worse (aging, like a good print?) Â It has to deal with formatting the SD card. When I insert a card and try to format it using the menu commands, the camera is increasingly just ignoring me. I'll select format, choose "yes" and it will just return me to the menu list. I do it again and it does the same. Eventually it *will* format the card, but it seems that I have to be more insistent these days. It used to do it after one extra trip, then it went to two, and today it required three trips to the menu to get it to work. Â Odd. Â The SD card is a brand new Transcend 4gb card, fwiw, and it functions correctly in all other ways.

chris_tribble Posted February 9, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Have you tried a fresh battery - it can play up if the battery's not fully charged... Also - why bother to reformat all the time? It's not really needed.
barjohn Posted February 9, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Another thing is that there seems to be some compatibility quirks with various cards, especially the high capacity variety. The 2gb Sandisk Ultra IIs ssem to be the most consistently reliable.
xrogers Posted February 9, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Pretty weird. I always reformat to erase, and have never had a hiccup (I've done it 30 or 40 times so far). Try it with a card off the supported cards list---that should give you a strong indication if it is an issue with card or camera. AaronJ Posted February 9, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 9, 2007 I just received my M8 with a Sandisk Ultra II 2gb card from a reliable dealer and had no issues formatting the card, writing images to it, etc. but now the card is not being detected by my computer (Mac Powerbook.) I tried another card and it was detected fine so I doubt it is the reader. MUST I use the M8 to interface with my computer?

I use only 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II (don't like to have too many eggs in one basket) and have not seen this problem with any M8 batteries.  Cheers,  Sean

My Powerbook, MacBook Pro and PowerMac all work just fine with the Sandisk Ultra II 2gb and an Apacer reader. The readers have a controller, and the SD card itself has a controller. Perhaps the card and reader just don't get along together. You shouldn't need to connect the camera to the computer.  I'd suggest trying a different reader. DaveEP Posted February 9, 2007 Share #9  Posted February 9, 2007 I originally thought I had a card format issue too - but it seems pretty consistant with one (older) card.  Since using Transcend 150x cards I have had no issues at all......
AaronJ Posted February 10, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted February 10, 2007 I have two cards: a 512mb SanDisk Ultra II and the 2GB SanDisk Ultra II that I purchased with the camera. Â I formatted the 2gb card inside the M8 and the camera seems happy with it but neither my PC or my Mac will recognize this card when I plug the camera itself or my card reader in. I did NOT format the 512mb card and it works perfectly. Do I have a bad 2GB card? I would greatly appreciate any/all feedback.
wstotler Posted February 10, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted February 10, 2007 I just dealt with the exact same bug as described by heninger when using a SanDisk 4G card I purchased today. The menu ignored me. When I tried again it got hung up on the YES option while formatting for five minutes. I figured something wasn't right (formatting doesn't take that long) and turning off the camera didn't have any effect whatsoever! I had to pull the battery out completely to make it stop. I am returning the card to the dealer and will stick with the SanDisk 2G card make. This is the card I originally purchased for my Digilux 2, BTW. AaronJ Posted February 10, 2007 Share #14  Posted February 10, 2007 Are any of these cards SDHC because he M8 will NOT format them  Both cards are run-of-the-mill Ultra II SanDisk cards. Non-SDHC.
hankg Posted February 10, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted February 10, 2007 I just recieved my M8. I pulled a Sandisk 1GB Ultra II Plus (the plus is a usb connector right on the card) from my wife's LX1 and fired off a couple of shots with it in the M8 and put the card in my PC, no problems. JPG and DNG recognized by PC, Photoshop and C1, the camera put a Leica folder on the card -so far so good. I am going to pick up a couple of Transcend 150x 4GB cards as many are using them without problems and they are much cheaper then the Sandisk. Â I didn't reformat the card, it has the Panasonic (from the LX1) and Leica folders on it.Seemed to work fine.
steve_l Posted February 10, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted February 10, 2007 Wade- Other folks have reported that the M8 is very sensitive to the "lock" slider on SD cards, and if it is even a little bit off the "unlock" position it may not be able to access it. It also seems that some card types have this problem worse than others.

MUST I use the M8 to interface with my computer? many older readers cannot handle more than 1 GB cards I use a new USB reader for my 2 GB cards & download directly with the built in reader in my laptop from my 1 GB card ,,,I checked & there is no way of updating the reader built into the laptop
KajFroeling Posted February 10, 2007 Share #18  Posted February 10, 2007 I have 2 sandisk Extreme-III 2 GB, 1 Ultra-II 1GB using a cardreader on my MacBook Pro and iMacG5 without the slighest problem. And flawless operstion in the M8 as well  Formatting or just deleting, still no problem.  I would check: card in a different camera or update the card reader if this isen't pretty new.  I had a 2GB CF card that suddenly became a 512MB card due to some internal failure, but as this was a geniune Sandisk I got a new one (there have been reported low quality false Sandisk Cards on the market)
AaronJ Posted February 10, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted February 10, 2007 I think Art nailed it -- my Powerbook doesn't seem to know what to do with a 2GB card. All the more reason to convince the wife that I NEED a Macbook Pro now, too!
Roderik Posted February 10, 2007 Share #20 Â Posted February 10, 2007 Same problem here with 2 Gig Sandisk III en IV cards. Not able to format in Camera. after formatting in Computer or other camera it seesm to work okay (writing images to it) but still not able to format. No problem with Lexar or Toshiba cards.... The problem of not able to read cards in mac might be the reader.. (that was my problem)
