Not sure and I have not heard anything about this from leica either, I know there working on something. What that is i am not sure but i would not be in a real hurry to sell off your DMR and R lenses either. I'm going to wait and continue to use my DMR . Pretty damn nice as it is.

Well if it is still no reason to sell it now, still does the job it did yesterday just as well as it will do tomorrow so really no hurry to sell mine if at all. I do use the M8 much more but I still need the DMR at least until a new R system comes or go to MF

Well

the DMR was always going to be some kind of a stop-gap, an interim solution, wasn't it? And now, with the introduction of the M8 - where you get a whole camera, not just a module, for less money but with the same picture quality - its position in the range looks pretty shaky. Also I should imagine that problems with Imacon have played their part in this announcement. The puzzle is - where is the R10?

John, I'm not so sure about that. There are things you can do with an SLR that you can't do with a rangefinder (and visa versa), it the rumour does turn out to be true then I'd be very surprised that they didn't wait until the R10 was available. On the other hand we had rumours the other week that both the DMR and D-Lux 3 were to be discontinued :-)

I would be more concerned with any continued support for the DMR. As Guy points out, it still works as well today as yesterday. Many may still feel the need for a firmware update that was being promised. Will that still happen? Will be interesting to see if the DMR gets some continued support from Leica, even if they no longer make it, just as they continue to service old M models today that are no longer made. Hoping that will be the case....at least for a few more years.

Prablem of firmware becaus relation stop between Imacon and Leica. Relation also is become to bat between Jenoptik and Leica, mabe same will be prablem in futur for M8 firmware.

Blasko,

With all due respect, your suggestions about what will be supported and not are speculation, unless you know what the contractual agreements among the various companies state. Also, this thread is talking about the DMR, not the M8. Future speculation on its firmware support is out of place here. Thanks for your condsideration.

Hi all,

Check this out

Rob Galbraith DPI: Leica Digital-Modul-R discontinued; new R digital planned?

Is this legit?

Robbe Gibson

Robbe:

I don't know if discontinued is the right word. The link to the RobGalbraith site says Leica has sold all they have made. Sold out may be a better term.

The note from Leica says they will continue to support the DMR. "Leica assures all DMR customers of its full customer service and are optimistic about the digital developments in the R System in the near future. "

Well, here's the text from the memo shown:

"Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

We regret to inform you that we have been informed by Leica Camera AG that the Leica Digital-Modul-R is sold out with immediate effect. Leica Camera will not be accepting any more orders or making any further deliveries of the DMR. Please inform your dealers accordingly."

IMHO, that reads 'discontinued' as there are no future deliveries and they're not taking any more orders. Maybe I'm misconsruing something here.

we all knew this was coming - we just didn't know when... leica does need to move on, however i am truly disappointed in that:

1. the DMR was deleivered late

2. the price was high

3. the firmware does not exploit the harware to it fullest

The R9&DMR is a GREAT tool -can it really be beat ?. I was hoping an R10 would be geared around "bringing new users into the leica program" by offering a lower priced / lower function digital only alternitive to the R9/DMR.

Normally i would say ..who cares if i am happy with my tools, however i feel the firmware needs considerable upgrading. My interetation of this news is that l most likely Leica will not be providing these upgrades due to "the stopping" of the DMR

Like all small run items, they will have had a certain number made. When they're gone, they're gone.

They have all gone, so it's gone.

Leica will have said to themselves "We reckon we can sell 5,000 (insert your own number here). We will have 5,000 made". Now they have sold out.

Let's hope they made some profit on them.

So how long do we have to wait for the R10? Here I was with my R9, happy for the moment to stick with film, and happy in the knowledge that Leica trail the R9 in their publicity as the Analogue/Digital system, so that I was reasonably future proof, and could switch when I want to, or when decreasing film sales force me to. Let's hope they have the decency to reprint their R9 brochures. It should go something like this:

"Analogue or Digital - No! Analogue AND Digital! - that is to say, Analogue only again (for the moment) but possibly Analogue or Digital in the future, or possibly Digital only, or possibly neither."

Not good. My humble opinion is that given their marketing of the R9 as an Analogue and Digital system, they should have kept going with another batch of DMRs until the R10D is released.
