Bill W Posted February 8, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This might have been discussed earlier but has anyone taken the clear protector off their baseplate and removed the sticker? The first time I put my M8 on a tripod, I messed up the clear protector and it looks worse than if I had just dragged it on the ground. I normally use a Really Right Stuff plate on my equipment but the one for the M8 had not arrived. Does anyone know of a vendor that makes replacements for this clear protector. I would really like to junk the one on the camera and get rid of the sticker that says it has passed inspection and is a safe device to use in my home. Advertisement Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Hi Bill W, Take a look here M8 Baseplate Protection. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted February 8, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Bill, I still have the protector on mine, but I'll throw it away and not replace it when it begins to peel off. I won't bother replaicing it.
DaveEP Posted February 8, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 8, 2007 I have not bothered to take mine off either. When it gets damaged I will, and not replace it. I don't see the need to take it off at this point. Â Also, my tripod head does not damage it (or hasn't yet), do it's still in good shape
Guest hammertone Posted February 8, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 8, 2007 This might have been discussed earlier but has anyone taken the clear protector off their baseplate and removed the sticker? In the two cases I had the possibility to do this, removing the protector and the CE sticker was the first thing I did when receiving the camera. Looks and feels better without these. This stuff is part of the packaging, it's not a functional part of the camera body.
wstotler Posted February 8, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 8, 2007 I pulled the plastic off of my baseplate, also, but left the electronic device sticker in place. Personal preference--I'd rather have small nicks and scratches on the baseplate from wear than a ratty looking plastic protector. To each his own. george + Posted February 8, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 8, 2007 I pulled it off the day it came. And did the same to the handgrip when that arrived. Â This is original Leica gear LOL - well built to take normal use. Â The plastic sheet peels right off - the product info takes a bit more effort. Better do it with your nails or a plastic blade. Worth the effort IMHO.
carstenw Posted February 8, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mine was gone a few moments after I noticed it. Pure instinct. Later on I wondered if it was the right thing to do. Yes, is the answer. I saw one on an old M6 (non-TTL), and it just made me feel that the owner had never really put that camera through its paces. Too pristine.
Eoin Posted February 8, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Never, ever, ever remove the plastic from the base plate, it will cost you thousands of $ off the resale value of your camera. Â Sarcasm off..... it's one of the first things I removed, it's a camera to be used, not a show piece, or an investment. Just another piece of useless plastic that won't degrade for the next 1,000 years.
Guest WPalank Posted February 8, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Bill, Your question is legitimate. I left the sticker on and have a RRS L-plate that I have had to take off and on a couple of times. It does seem to leave scratches near the tripod receptacle on the base plate even though I have been really careful!
carstenw Posted February 8, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Simply using the camera and not worrying about the baseplate will never lower the value of the camera by more than the cost of a baseplate... What does a baseplate cost?
mhoutman Posted February 8, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Bill, thanks for your question; I was still in doubt whether the sticker was part of transport-protection or seen for normal use. Â Michiel
Bill W Posted February 8, 2007 Author Share #12 Â Posted February 8, 2007 Thanks everyone, mine is soon to be removed. I guess I am too anal about my stuff and hate to inflict wear and tear when it is not necessary. I am looking at buying a half case.
glenerrolrd Posted February 9, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Just a different perspective....I was actually looking for some of the old Scotch(3M) brand black tape to cover the wear points on my M8. I used to do this on my M4,M5 and M6 bodies and it avoided almost any marks. When I would trade a body..I just pulled off the tape and cleaned up the camera..always got top $ for my equipment. I have seen some people cover the Leica name and red dot to avoid advertising a high cost item. When using two bodies we put a thin red tape on the body to quickly identify it. My dad used to cover the leather seats in his new Buick with cheap looking clear plastic seatcovers. Looked like absolute crap and your butt would sweat lock to the surface in the summer. I never understood why he would pay a premium for the next owner to enjoy.  Perhaps someone can explain  Rex
ken_tanaka Posted February 9, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted February 9, 2007 When I bought my M7 a few years back I thought that the plastic covering the base plate was meant to be removed, although it seemed like a strange isolated spot for protective film. After a few moments picking at it I realized that the adhesive was far too strong to suggest end-user removal. It remains there today, and looks fine. Â The M8's film is the same. My opinion: leave it alone. Spend your energy on more productive facets of the camera.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 9, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted February 9, 2007 I thought M users liked there camera's to look beat up and wear nicely. Plastic came off within seconds of opening the box
