Which battery for Leicameter MR 4?

Dear all

I just got a nice Leicameter MR 4 No 94991 for my M3. How do I know which battery I need? I have both an EPX625G (Alkaline 1.5 V) and a Wine Cell MRB625 (1.35 V).

I read that originally the Leicameter was designed for the Mallory PX 625 1.35 V battery, but later models were adjusted for 1.5 V Alkaline. How do I know which model is mine?

Can you please help?

First correct, last not possible, unless the circuit was replaced, by a bridge style circuit.

 

The Wein cell with an O ring will be ok, or you can get or make up an adapter to drop the 1.5 volts from a silver cell to 1.35 volts, using a Schottky diode.

 

I'll find the instructions to make an adapter if you want.

 

Or you can solder in a Schottky diode into the battery connector wiring...

 

The battery test will be in the correct zone if the battery is ok...

I used a 1.5v alkaline battery in my MR-4 and the meter always indicated the voltage was slightly off. Not wishing to muck about with the innards of the meter, I just lived with it.

 

Reading on Ken Rockwell's site about the Wein 1.35v replacement for the original mercury battery, I ordered one, popped it in, and now the meter needle sits right on top of the silver dot, indicating proper battery power.

"In helping my friend secure an MR-4 for his non-metered M's, I've gotten hold of several of them in working/accurate condition and discovered something interesting:

 

Checking the readings at the low, mid and high ends of the brightness range, I have found no variation between the following (voltages tested on a meter):

 

a new (never used) PX625 1.3V Mercury battery

 

a new PX625-A 1.5V Alkaline battery

 

a new MS76 1.55v Silver-Oxide battery in a CRIS MR9 1.3v adaptor

 

a new MS76 1.55v Silver-Oxide battery in a washer-spacer (left over from a Wein cell).

 

I did not have the same results when I tried this with a Leicaflex SL, M5 or CL, all of which required compensation with a 1.5v and then would still not read accurately at both ends of the brightness range.

 

Could it be that the MR-4, made by Metrawatt, has a built-in voltage regulator that nobody knows about? I'm reluctant to open these meters since I don't own them, and wouldn't know what I was looking at if I did. Just curious if anybody else has checked an MR4 with different battery types and found the same thing. I don't mean the readings are close, they're *identical*. BTW for using the MR9 adaptor I would recommend a 386 vs an MS76 because the latter is thicker and pushes the battery door open a little--and those battery doors don't look like they're too strong"

Using the battery that fits today, stop top down from the given reading until is it clear it's gone whacko.

 

I'd never use one now Way too much trouble. Take it off an bin it.

The Wein cell is your best choice. Though it's still not guaranteed to make it work. I got a Wein cell, and it worked fine (I used it in another camera and the meter readings were correct), but turns out my MR4 needs adjusting. I just keep it on my shelf. Too much of a hassle to send it out and get it fixed. I'd suggest an alternative meter.

Thank you for all your helpful comments. Looks like this is not an easy issue. As I will leave today for a two weeks trip to Italy, I better bring my Gossen Multisix meter and do some 1.5 V vs. 1.35 V experiments afterwards.

Does anybody use the MR-9 adapter and a silver oxide battery (see description MR-9 Mercury Battery Adapter) in a Leicameter MR or MR-4? If so, did you run into any problems?

 

The MR-9 would seem to be the best solution; however, one source of the adapter claims that the Leicameter needs a modification (http://www.criscam.com/products_services/mercury_battery_adapters/#Leica). I contacted that source and they cannot or will not tell me what modification it needs, simply that they don't do it.

I use the MR-9 in the MR4 (actually in a few of them). It can be touchy to get the battery in just the right position, but once it makes good contact they work fine. The Wein cell works well also. There is also another adapter made which takes a zinc-air hearing aid battery. All three are good solutions.

Can you be specific about the problem with the MR-9? Which battery are you using in it? This thread mentions two, a "386" and an "MS76". Is the problem the contact of the battery with the MR-9, or the contact of the whole assembly, i.e., MR-9 with battery in it, with the contacts in the battery case of the Leicameter? I've contacted CRIS, and they say that Kanto, the Japanese manufacturer of the MR-9, says that the Leicameter needs a modification; however, CRIS can't tell me any more about the modification, and Kanto doesn't answer my emails. It would help to know whether the modification is mechanical or electronic.

I use a 386 in the MR-9. The 76 and 44 batteries are too thick. Sometimes when I put in the MR-9 with battery the meter has no response, until I open the battery compartment and make sure the battery is in perfectly flat, so it looks to me like it's a battery fit issue.

OK, so the combination MR-9 and 386 isn't "thick enough," where with the 76 and 44 batteries the combination is "too thick." Or do you mean you have to push the 386 into the MR-9?

It's probably some kind of measurement or spacing issue... I use a different adapter, the one sold by Dutchman Frans de Gruijter (author of the PDF linked above by Xmas) and it works nicely with the MR. This adapter uses a diode to get down the voltage of a SR44 silver cell to 1.35V. It's also quite a bit cheaper than the CRIS adapter. However, it doesn't work with my Gossen Sixtar (aka Gossen Super Pilot), because of the design of the Gossen's battery chamber. You can also use one of the mechanical adapters sold on Ebay together with an zinc-air hearing aid battery (675 type).

Thanks for the tip about Frans de Gruijter. That definitely sounds like the way to go, especially if one lives in Europe. I will check it out.

real world solution (s); If you have or can get a wein cell, you can replace the cell itself with a 675 zinc/air hearing aid battery. Use a pair of pliers like a spanner the push the "ring" off the exhausted wein cell and insert a new 675 and voila! you're good. Better yet is use a readily available PX625A alkaline cell as a direct replacement for the original. It'll work fine. This was suggested to me by reputable repairperson and I've used it for several years now. Just do it, it works. cheers!

true. It depends on the camera/meter. For my clip on meters, the MR-9 CRIS +76 battery worked fine. SL had issues. M5 was Ok. Rollie 35 was ok.

 

Wein Cell is ok, but recover the air holes when not in use or the cell dies quickly.

 

Alkaline cells only work when output is 1.35 volts and it is not stable over their life. AVOID THEM.

 

The repair shop in Phoenix or Tempe still sells the MR 9 . I found it there yesterday.

      I've had the Nitecore charger for few years without problems charging batteries for M240. Just bought couple of new BP-SCL2 batteries at very attractive price via FEDEX from Hong Kong. When I try to charge them for first time with the Nitecore there appears the " EE EE " message indicating shorted battery. HK seller now says that I must "activate" them via first time charge from original Leica charger. Said original charger is misplaced or lost somewhere over past few years. So two questions:
      1. Is it true about having to "activate" a BP-SCL2 with original charger?
      2. If so, is there another member of the forum in/near Pinellas County, Florida, who might be able (taking precautions all round) to charge them on an original charger?

      Whenever I remove my SL2 battery, I lose all language, app, date and time settings, etc., and I'm forced to set them each time I remove the battery.
      Has anyone experienced this? I'm now charging with the usb-c port, but would like to figure this one out......

      I have a problem.
      I have Leica 60 type 240.
      I have a non-original charger (nitecore)
      I don't know how old the battery is. The charger is new. I bought it a week ago. While charging the battery the EE message appears after about 10 seconds. Yes, I know the manual says it is short circuit protection but what causes the short circuit? The battery? All in all, it doesn't make sense to me. Maybe there is someone from Poland who reads this and lives in Gdansk, Sopot or Gdynia and could help me? Or you know what could the reason be. Some people wrote that it was the charger and they had the same problem and they say we have to use only the original charger. Unfortunately, I do not have the original Leica charger and I don't think I can get it quickly. I don't want to buy it. I have had the camera for 2 weeks. I wanted to take some pictures but as I can see there is no chance. Do you have any solution? I can’t get the battery or the charger here. Can it be charged any other way? Do I have to go to Leica Store Poland in Warsaw?

      What's the best way to extend the battery life? 
      If I shoot DNG/JPG, where do the JPGs end up? I don’t see them when I import the files into Lightroom. Are they the ones transferred over to the Leica Photos? 
      If one shoots A for aperture, shutter speed, and focus, is it the same as Full Auto in Scene Mode?
      I notice the photos I take in Black and White turn to color when I import them into Lightroom. Importing the B&W photo into Leica Fotos shows it is B&W, which I assume is so that it can be shared. My question is: Are there specific Lightroom presets that show the Leica style?
      I occasionally get the red box with spinning circle. Why does it do that? I assume it’s writing to disk but I’ve had occasions where I haven’t taken a photo at all, so there’s nothing to “write to disk.”
      Can I use the Leica Q2 LCD panel to focus/shoot like my Canon 5D Mark IV? Maybe I’m wrong but I recall seeing a video of a Leica Q doing so. 
      Does changing the user profile also change what’s found on the favorites menu? 
      Is there any sort of logic for how to set up the FN versus the wheel button? I appreciate their usefulness but I find I can’t remember what’s where and I end up going back to the menu button. Any suggestions on how to set it up logically?

      The first time I charged my Q2's battery it went to the green "charge" light. Yesterday the battery indicator was red. so I charged it overnight. this morning both the green charge and the orange 80% are lite. does this mean it's not fully charging? I pulled it out and re-inserted it. the charge was blinking but then stopped after 5 minutes. the orange 80% is still lite.? to me this means it's stuck between 80-100%? ? Anyone else experience this?
