I talked to CS Solms today. Upgrades, either crystal screen or full upgrade to M9P will be available from October onwards. The price of a full upgrade will be 1050 Euro net (EU add VAT)

But it will save you the cost of an extended guaranty if your camera is about two years old then (mine will be past two years) so that makes it quite reasonable by Leica standards.

I booked the second week of November. By then it will have been through an extended trip in Africa and need a CLA anyway, making it even more attractive. Chrome I think, and an extra engraving of my name at the back :)

Could you book it already?

Thanks for that but I think I might just get a new giottos screen protector and 1" of black tape and save myself 1025 euro (+VAT)!!

Just kidding. Anyway did they give a price for a sapphire screen only upgrade

Its good to know there is a price for such a thing. But as I don't have any scratches on my LCD, and the body isn't so ugly and brassed that I can't look at it anymore, I will wait and continue to wear out the current M9 skin.

i will send them money for the mirrorless camera in 2012 or the m10, if either are deserving and i hope they, but not to have a different top plate and a sapphire screen. admittedly it is beautiful, especially the black one, but its a camera to be used not an object to be admired. and personally, i will be very happy when my m9 is all brassed from use -- shows someone passionate about taking pictures rather than being passionate about how one looks.

One does not preclude the other in many peoples worlds.

- Great musicians using mint condition instruments.

- Very serious triathletes with immaculate, latest and greatest carbon bikes.

- Professional motor racers with immaculate 911's.

- Top level golfers who clean and re-grip their clubs every 5 or so rounds.

on and on....

A brassed camera show's someone is passionate does it? Could it not also show they have a high acidity in their sweat and / or are clumsy / careless? :)

Will there be any way to tell a M9-P and a M9u apart? Hot shoe engraving? Covering?

Pete.

I think covering is completely changed with the upgrade, together with top and bottom (Jaap speaks of chrome...) : probably s/n / hotshoe will remain the same, revealing it as a "M9u" - nothing bad, maybe interesting as a collectible around 2070-80 :p... like the "factory upgraded" LTMs.

Wonder what they do to serial number and hot-shoe; if the camera remain the serial number on the new hot shoe.

So far even the EXIF file from a Leica M9-P says Leica M9, which I guess is fair enough as the Professional is simply the outside top cover and the sapphire glass on the back.

The brassed look I have already right now.

So is this just an M9 upgrade program or will there now (after October) be an M9 a la carte program offered?

There is a limited a-la-carte program in place already, since more than a year (special leather, individual engravings)

Craziness. 1k to change a few bits and bobs. I do like the white Leica logo on the top plate. I could get some vinyl stickers printed for about £70 that would scratch that itch.

Not really. The program costs that much, but a CLA would have set me back over 300 Euro, or alternatively the extended guaranty (although I think that one overpriced) so we are talking about far less money for an attractive upgrade. And nobody is forcing you to take it, but it may be of interest to some.
