M9 Warranty Extension

Before someone asks what you are referring to: Leica Camera AG - Service - Warranty Extension M9

Secondly, this is a great deal in my opinion.

Lastly, I'm not sure what Leica's intent is other than they feel confidant that they will make more money on this offer than they will lose. Sounds like they are pretty confidant about the reliability of the M9 if they are only charging 290 euros to warrantee a year old piece of optical-electronics. Rumor around here has it that this is a piece of unreliable crap.

290 Euros for one year. I believe this is one of those "win-win" scenarios.

If your camera needs service out of warranty it will undoubtedly cost more than that...

For Leica the expense of the technicians is fixed, and unless your sensor is tits up the parts are probably the least part of the expense, so this is almost pure profit.

I tried to buy this today and is all I get is a link to an inquiry form, when is what I want to do is buy the extension and be done. I entered my S/N and date of purchase. The credit card has a drop down list, but nothing is there and then I hit continue where I then get this inquiry form.

Anyone succeed in purchasing the warranty extension on the Leica site?

IIRC, you can buy online in Germany but have to go through a dealer elsewhere.

Somebody please correct me if I got this wrong.

K-H.

I've bought it online from NZ. At least, I think I have.

I completed the online form and got an email back asking for credit card details and a copy of my warranty form or receipt. I sent those off a week or so ago. Haven't heard since, so I sent a follow-up yesterday. Haven't had a reply yet.

Cheers

John

So it sounds like you must complete the form and wait for a reply and then send further info, in addition to credit card details, like was requested from you by Leica.

Strange way to handle it if they validated my ownership with first registration and allowed me to download the Lightroom subscription, twice. I just wish we could buy this extension from a dealer and be done with it.

For me thank you but no thank you. The figures do not add up. Assuming the average repair cost to be something like 1000 Euro to Leica, the breakeven point would be a whopping 30% failure rate in the third year! I don't think even the most ardent pessimist on this forum would call that realistic. If we calculate an administrative overhead, the rate is still well over 25 %. I would not pay such an insurance rate for anything that is not acutely lifethreatening.

That's the big assumption in your figures. I think the average will be much lower.

Nevertheless, I don't dispute your central point that the warranty extension represents a good money earner for Leica and that €300 is expensive insurance (although it is not out of line with what Apple charges for their AppleCare 2 year warranty extension).

JAAP, I wonder about that. What is the alternative? Regular insurance doesn't cover product failure.

I called my Leica dealer (who subsequently said he can't sell this warranty extension to me), and we discussed the possibility of a MAC warranty ... but we need to investigate what really happens if I have a M9 problem, and wether they will even cover a used camera even if it is still under the factory warranty.

One of my M9s has about 6 months left on the factory warranty, and the other a bit over a year and I use both for business ... an issue with the sensor after the warranty expires is probably of most concern being a big repair bill.

The other aspect is value add should you sell when the next M digital arrives ... which I estimate to be with-in the time the additional warranty would be in effect.

I don't know, I'm thinking about it.

Insurance in general - and extended guaranty is a kind of repair insurance- is only worth its cost if you:

a. Find it hard/impossible to pay for the insured value should the worst happen.

b. And/or value the peace of mind.

The worst-case repair scenario, apart from damage by impact which should be covered by a "normal"insurance, is(as Ian points out, I am being quite pesssimistic here) something like a full main board/sensor replacement @ about 1500 euro. That means you pay 300 to insure against 1500. You would get far better odds at a bookmaker.

And the repair will include a full year guaranty afterwards as well.

In case of a total loss breakdown -and that is extremely unlikely- by the time most M9s come out of guaranty, the used price will have dropped to something between 3000 and 4000 Euro - again very bad odds indeed, as you are betting a 10% chance that your M9 will go up in smoke within a year.

So I would only advise an extended guaranty if a 1500 Euro repair will put you in the poor house - I do not know any M9 owners where that is the case.

  • 1 month later...

To my friends who did get this extended warranty. Do you now have regrets, like me, that the M9 upgrade program already has this extended warranty and what are you going to do now? I called Leica NJ (New Jersey) and they said that I am stuck with the $400.00 warranty and that they could not refund me if I decided to get the upgrade. So now I probably will not do the upgrade. By the way, I purchased the extended warranty from leica Germany NOT Leica NJ. There is a difference.

Good luck,

Mark
