teehas53 Posted February 7, 2007 Share #21 Â Posted February 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) First, let me say that I'm not an Adobe loyalist or insider. Nor am I devoted to any one particular piece of software or workflow to the exclusion of others. I happen to have used ACR with Canon DSLRs for a long time, and find it efficient for deadline-sensitive professional work. Â I'm also very interested to see what Phase One will do with the upcoming v.4 of C1. There is no doubt that C1 makes very beautiful conversions, and the next upgrade should be even better. Â I'm not sure I'm making my point clear. Everything I've read about the DNG format indicates it is a true open standard - Adobe holds no "key." The entire spec is published and available for anyone to look at. That's the whole point, to make it unlike all other proprietary RAW formats, which do contain "locked" data. Â I applaud Leica for its foresight in choosing DNG as its RAW format. This is the way all manufacturers should be going (at least from the photographer's point of view.) And their choice of C1LE as the bundled RAW converter is also not an issue - that's completely Leica's decision. Â My disappointment in C1 (for now) is that once files have been viewed in Bridge (even without any changes being made) they cannot be viewed or adjusted in C1 - ever. This may simply be oversight. My hope it that's the case, and it will be corrected in the near future. There may be more to this "under the hood." I'm not a programmer and can't speak to that. Regardless, it's a tactical error on the part of Phase One, IMHO. Â And as I said above, the real irony here is this situation requires one to choose C1 - or - the others, with no going back. In effect, it makes the M8/C1 combination just as proprietary as any other RAW format! It dictates the photographer choose one specific program for conversions (assuming you want to use C1.) Completely counter to one of the main points of DNGs existence. Â The idea behind DNG is to open up options and insure future compatibility. Leica is on the bandwagon. Now it remains to be seen what Phase One will do. Â I'm done now - let's get back to making pictures! Â Tom
