I just spent a week shooting with a Nikon D3 in a small Jazz club. The Nikon's 6500 ISO was a revelation. Has anyone compared the files from the D3 with Canon's 5D II ? I know andy uses his R glass with a Nikon D700. I'm looking for a low light alternative to use in these clubs. Even at ISO 400, the DMR looses too much of what's special about the files at 200-100 ISO.

 

Here's hoping we have some alternative solutions soon.

As I said in the other thread, the D3 files are great in terms of ISO, but you do have to process them differently above ISO 400. They require a sharpening program, and the AA on the D3 is higher than it is on the Canon, even.

 

The 5d2 might impress you more, since it has more resolution to begin with the NR on-board doesn't quite go as mushy as the D3 at higher ISOs. OTH, it falls off before the D3 does in terms of a printable file.

 

If I'm honest with myself, the combo of the 80R Lux on the 1ds2 and 5d are what started me down the whole digital Leica path If it weren't for the fundamental lens compatibilty limitations (no 35 Lux; no 19 Elmarit without shaving the mirror) I'd own a 5d2 right now.

 

I don't think either replace the DMR in terms of detail or colour (at lower ISOs of course). The only thing that comes close right now is an M9.

Has Canon changed something in their EOS cameras? I could always do stop-down metering with the 5d and 1ds2!

My 5D2 meters quite erratically when I use a Leitax converted 60 Elmarit stopped down giving substantial underexposure much of the time. I think that it is different from the 5D or 1DS in this respect.

The Nikons don't suffer from the Canon exposure problems.

I have had great success with the Canon Mark IV. No problems with exposures using a Novaflex adapter. Rolo detailed a previous thread to this effect and I followed his suggestions. Will the new Leica solution be able to shoot 10fps?

Interesting... I wonder if it's the Leitax on an EOS... you don't usually need to convert like that. Is the adapter chipped? The cheapish EOS R adapters are chipped and seem to work well.

I'm off tonight to go shoot at Smalls (the jazz club) with my "new" D3 (11,000 activations). I shot a bunch of frames last night in the dark outside with an old manual Nikon 24 2.8. I'm very surprised how sharp this lens is. It does fall off at the edges, what few lenses don't. I'm looking into converting some Leica lenses, that make sense. Can't touching my 80 Lux, as I use this all the time with my DMR. My 19 & 24 Elmarit & 35Lux won't work with the D3.

 

The logical first step might be the Leica Elmarit-R 28 mm. Has anybody tried the convserion & what are the results? Thanks all. Ben

The only limitation on metering with unchipped lenses on the D700 and D3 variants is that you don't get the matrix metering. Likewise the focus confirmation works regardless of whether there's a chip.

 

The functional benefits of chipping an unchipped lens seem to be limited to enabling matrix metering and saving the trouble of entering the aperture and focal length into the menu system.

I didn't test it on my own.

 

But I read here and in others forums that the metering with AF confirm adapters doesn't work correct with the 5d2. This means in general it works but in detail you must add a none linear manual compensation when stopping down. This seems to happend just with the 5d2 not with the 1d camera series. I have no idea about the reasons for this behavior.

I used the R19 / 2.8 ROM (latest version) via the Novoflex adapter on a 1D Mk IV for a while and the (stop down) metering worked just fine. I had to file down the back element brass protection barrel by about 1mm for the lens to clear the mirror - but it then took superb images. Having said this, I now think the adapter/stop down metering is too much of a pain and would not go this way again with any camera/lens combination.

7D is a 1.6X crop factor camera with a smaller mirror than a full-frame (D)SLR.

I have converted both the Summilux 35 and the Elmarit 19 V2 with Leitax and have no problem at all on my A900. In addition I have converted the Lux 80, the 80-200 f4, and the 35-70 f4. Both the zooms need an extra milling in the Leitax bayonette to accomodate the ROM ribbon. The only issue with those five converted lenses is the 35-70 did not reach infinity. (Maybe just a one off?) However, focusing even with the matt screen isn't so easy with the 80 at 1.4. Perhaps just my old eyes. The conversion is really quite easy.

Yes totally. I have not tried it on a full frame camera yet though.
