cocker Posted February 5, 2007 Share #1  Posted February 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Perhaps some of the more logically-thinking members could help me check out my thinking here! I have an M8 and have just bought a CV 21mm Color Skopar with external finder. As the 21mm translates to 28mm or so on the M8 am I right in thinking that the CV 21 viewfinder will not be correct? Am I also correct in thinking that the 28mm framelines in the M8 viewfinder (whihc the LTM to M Mount bring up) will not correspond to the 28mm view of the 21mm CV because they (the 28mm lines in the M8!!) are really equivalent to 37mm or so. So what I need is a 28mm external finder for the CV21mm - see why I'm having a problem getting my head round this:p:p  Help - is my thinking right or off course? rjans Posted February 5, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 5, 2007 I think you need a 28 mm external viewfinder on the M8. Best
gravastar Posted February 5, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 5, 2007 Yes, you are correct. I've just bought the metal CV28 viewfinder to use with the 21mm ASPH Elmarit on the M8. Â The 24mm ASPH Emarit is more of a problem on the M8. The ideal viewfinder for that is the CV21D which was made for use with 21mm lenses on the Epson R-D1 with it's x1.6 factor. 21x1.6=33.6, 24x1.33=31.92 so it's a reasonable match. Unfortunately that viewfinder is discontinued....... I'm still looking for one. Â Bob.
gravastar Posted February 5, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 5, 2007 Keith, the framelines on the M8 correspond to the effective length on the M8. So, for your 21mm lens you can use the frameline that is known as the 28mm one on the M8.......................... Â My namesake will get me confused LOL. I think you will find the 28mm frame lines in the M8 have a field of view equivalent to a 28x1.33=37.3mm lens. Â Â Bob.
wparsonsgisnet Posted February 5, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 5, 2007 Keith, you are correct -- and I started to answer and couldn't get my head around the right way. This is the second draft of my answer. Â Your lens is an effective 28mm. However, in the M8's viewfinder, there is no 21mm frame line. The 24mm and 28mm frame lines fit the nominal lens length, but the view in the frame lines correspond to the effective length of the lens (sort of). Â So, my 24mm lens has a frameline in the M8, labelled 24mm. Its fov is approx. that of a 32mm lens. The 28mm frameline fov is for a 28 * 1.33 lens (about 38mm). Â You'll need the external finder unless you want to intuit the image fov by using the M8 with the 21mm lens for a while.

I was initially confused, as well. My bad.

gurtch Posted February 5, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 5, 2007 Keith : I use the excellent, and reasonable CV 28 finder with my Zeiss 21mm ZM. This combo is becoming my favorite M8 setup for the wide seascapes/landscapes I like to take. Dave G in NJ
