Xmas Posted June 6, 2011 Share #2  Posted June 6, 2011 Hi  Difficult to tell even with the camera in hand. The leitz black paint of that period was variable in quality. The camera may have spent its life in a glass showcase. Some people buy a used black one with nice brass showing at the edges and have it refurbished including a repaint with a modern back paint. They have a cumpulsion to make it perfect rather than a used collectible  Noel
JBA Posted June 6, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted June 6, 2011 Every camera shop I've been to in Tokyo that sells Leica knows and specifies whether a black paint camera is original or repainted. Original in perfect condition (new old stock, etc.) are the most expensive, with brassed but original paint next most expensive, and repainted cameras significantly cheaper. Why not just ask at the shop?
JBA Posted June 6, 2011 Share #4  Posted June 6, 2011 If it has been repainted, the price tag will say 後塗り.
oatjiro Posted June 6, 2011 Author Share #5 Â Posted June 6, 2011 Thank you very much for your advise. This one is exceptional because Japan serial number reference guide was missed this lot : 1078xxx so even the experience Japanese merchant didn't confidence to confirm and its price is equivocal between original or repaint. However information from Leica Serial Numbers: M's Sorted by Type show this serial number is original and I found another one near SN at Leica M3 no. 1078732 | Christie's so I rather agree with Xmas and thank a lot for JBA about knowledgable informations. Finally I already decide to buy it.

Xmas Posted June 6, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted June 6, 2011 serial numbers get faked too... But I hope you got a reet un. Good luck! Â Yes all you need is a pantographic or CNC machine, and a new top plate or an infilled top plate, since you are going to paint it. But a counterfeiter is unlikely to pick a suspicious serial number... Even a BP current MP is nice, enjoy yours. Â Noel

dkCambridgeshire Posted June 6, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted June 6, 2011 If you have access to an infrared camera, an infrared photograph of the serial number might reveal any fakery - if it has been faked. Â dunk
