SiOnara Posted June 5, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted June 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Â I just purchased a second hand 35mm Summilux Pre ASPH from about 1981. It was going cheap as it has a small scratch on the rear element. This scratch is about 3mm long on the upper right part of the rear element. Â Having taken some pictures on my M8 into the sunlight, I noticed the following flares. If I stop down from f1.4 to f2 then the flare disappears. Â I just wondered if they looked normal for the 35mm lux or if these could be caused by the scratch. Â Thanks Jei
Advertisement Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Hi SiOnara, Take a look here Summilux / Scratch / Flare. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ecar Posted June 5, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted June 5, 2011 They certainly don't look normal to me. I also doubt a 3mm scratch would have such a large effect... Any other problems with the lens? Separation perhaps?
Philinflash Posted June 6, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted June 6, 2011 Not normal. From your pics, I think I can guess where you bought the lens...
pgk Posted June 6, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted June 6, 2011 Its ages since I had that lens and whilst I found that it could flare at times. your flaring is very pronounced indeed and worse than I can remember my lens being - I doubt that it has much to do with the scratch though. A couple of things; were the shots taken using a hood, and was any sort of filter attached? What aperture and what camera (M8?)?

The flare only seem to happen at f1.4. Stop down to f2 and everything clears up. Â This was taken on the M8u. I took some shots at the same time with my ASPH Elmarit 28mm with no flare at all but I kinda expected this with the Elmarit.

In that case I would suspect that you have pushed it a bit! It doesn't surprise me that you can create a harsh flare pattern like this wide open, with angled, glancing hard sunlight and without a hood. I seem to remember smaller versions of similar flare patterns on my lens (though not as bad - I invariably used the hood) but of course the crop factor of the M8 would make such patterns proportionately larger within the image frame. Its possible that the scratch hasn't helped but I wouldn't think its made a significant difference. Put a hood on this lens and it should perform better in such conditions - I'd be perfectly happy to use such a lens myself. Did you visit the nearest dealers in the area where the photos were taken:)?
jaapv Posted June 6, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted June 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) By the shape of the flare I would sat this is not caused by the scratch but by problems with a lens element inside, possibly separation.
JPH1962 Posted June 6, 2011 Share #8  Posted June 6, 2011 Hi! The pics shown remind me of my own pre-asph 35 Lux (very late titaium finish, germany) - I would say that this kind of flare is absolutely normal with this lens, in fact it is an issue that is largely described in various forums (search in RFF). Using the hood won't change it.  The scratch on the real element might show when you stop down further, scratches on the rear elemtn are nasty compared to the ones on the front element.  rgds  JP
