garyp Posted June 2, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted June 2, 2011 They're for attaching a strap to carry the lens.
masjah Posted June 2, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted June 2, 2011 To go further, Leica actually say to carry the camera/lens combination by a strap attached to the lugs on the lens, and not by the camera strap (in order to avoid strain on the mount). jaapv Posted June 2, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted June 2, 2011 And that is very valid - I have bent a number of R mounts with this lens by not carrying it properly.

wildlightphoto Posted June 2, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted June 2, 2011 Anyone know where these straps can be gotten? Â It's an ordinary camera strap, same as the one used to hold a camera.

anabasis Posted June 3, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted June 3, 2011 The real trouble with the eyelets, on this and certain other lenses, is that you need to use a ring to go on the strap since the eye is so small. Â I use a black rapid strap with my heavy R lenses so I use a lug that screws into the tripod socket instead of using the eyes on my 180 'Cron. If I am using a monopod, I just throw the rig on my shoulder. Â The Modular Telyt system is much easier to mount a strap on as they have full size eyes on the handle and tripod foot. They are also a heck of a lot heavier. Â JCA
masjah Posted June 3, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted June 3, 2011 I just use the standard R strap on this lens, though that's really only for lifting and moving about from the bag, since I use this lens exclusively on a tripod. If you are carrying round the neck for an extended period, I would try the R wide strap (14235 I think) which I have on my "travel" R8 + 28-90. mmradman Posted June 3, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted June 3, 2011 I just use the standard R strap on this lens, though that's really only for lifting and moving about from the bag, since I use this lens exclusively on a tripod. If you are carrying round the neck for an extended period, I would try the R wide strap (14235 I think) which I have on my "travel" R8 + 28-90. Â Wide strap, item 14235, is imposible to find, ffordes still lists it but in reality it is not in stock. Placed an order couple of months ago but I was told not in stock anymore. Â My solution to the problem is to use 2 mini key rings applied to eyelets and attach wide strap fitted with carabiner type fasteners. I think it is known as Olympus style strap. Mine came with the lens but is reminds me more of a laptop bag strap than camera/lens strap. Â Leica strap fasteners are fantastic but regular strap is too narrow for such a heavy lens so I would suggest wider one, matter of taste and preference of course. topoxforddoc Posted June 3, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted June 3, 2011 I use a Rapid Strap RS4 with my heavy R lenses (eg 280/4 or 180/2). I put the carabinier onto the lens tripod mount and it's very easy to carry and use.

psquared Posted June 7, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted June 7, 2011 I guess I'm a minimalist. I use my hands to carry the heavy lenses, including the modular telyts.
james.liam Posted June 8, 2011 Author Share #14 Â Posted June 8, 2011 I guess I'm a minimalist. I use my hands to carry the heavy lenses, including the modular telyts. Â You must have big hands. Â My concern is the strain on the mount and the habit of grabbing at the body rather than the lens; it's second nature and reminding yourself not to with a moderately large lens, is not always automatic.
